Recap / Princess Tutu "La Sylphide"

Go To

Once upon a time, there was a maiden with wings of freedom.
A man in love with this maiden thought, "if I could just bind those wings, we would never have to be apart even for a moment."
But when the man wrapped the maiden's wings in a magical shawl, the wings immediately fell to the ground and the maiden died.
The man did not know that the maiden's wings were the source of her life.

Mytho is given a pretty gem by Edel and decides to give it to Tutu as a gift. A jealous Rue has other ideas, and persuades Mytho to let her borrow it for the evening so she can "fix it up."

Tropes

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Mr. Cat has one in the form of a student who is a goat. Funnily enough, every time he tries to pull his usual threat of marrying anyone who breaks the rules, the goat goes right ahead and breaks said rule, much to his chagrin.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Kraehe fails to kill Tutu, but still manages to escape with Mytho, who has reverted back to a doll-like state after having the piece of his heart ripped out.
  • Exact Eavesdropping: Both Rue and Fakir overhear Mr. Cat tell the goat student why he refuses to reciprocate his feelings for her. Respectively, because he doesn't love her back and because it's his choice what he does, almost as though telling the two that what they are doing is wrong. How each reacts leads to...
  • Foil: When Rue and Fakir hear Mr. Cat unwittingly give them advice on how they are treating Mytho, both seem to consider that perhaps they are in the wrong for clinging to and controlling him. However, while Fakir does come to terms with Mytho's choice to regain his heart, Rue continues being Kraehe and trying to keep Princess Tutu from giving him his heart.
  • Kiss of Death: Kraehe kisses Mytho as she rips the piece of heart from him. It doesn't kill him, but he's left in a catatonic state.
  • Murder the Hypotenuse: Kraehe lays a trap inside the gem that is meant to kill Tutu. It doesn't quite work, but it leads to the discovery that Mytho's feeling of love was also inside the gem.
