  • Cool Old Guy: Mr. Briney is an affable retired sailor who doesn't feels his age at all. He not only retained his seafaring experience, but he even has a Wingull-shaped speedboat hidden in his house.
  • I Was Quite a Looker: In the brief flashback showing Mr. Briney during his youth he appears as a muscular, handsome man, a far cry from the balding old man he's today.
  • Jerkass Ball: Ash becomes really impatient in the episode due to his inability to take a ship to Dewford Town, even rudely scolding May when she tried to cheer up the group by saying that they at least found the beach. This plays a role in the episode, as Ash's impatience is what motivates May to try to find a ship to Dewford and eventually meeting Mr. Briney.
  • Karma Houdini: The Team Aqua Grunt that appeared in this episode and the previous one manages to escape safely before he can pay for the havoc he caused in Devon and blackmailing Mr. Briney by threatening to use his Crawdaunt to harm Peeko so he could escape in his ship. While Team Aqua is defeated later in the anime, the fate of this particular Grunt is unaddressed, as he never appears again.
  • Malaproper: Briney describes how he used to "sail the seven seas" and how he would leave everyone "quaking in my wake". May tries to use these same terms later when describing him to her friends, but she's got them all mixed up.
He travelled the seven sails in his quaking ship, and stayed awake the whole time.
  • Retired Badass: Mr. Briney sailed across the seven seas in his youth, but he eventually retired to the life of a simple fisherman. He still has all his old sailing skills with him, and he even built a high-tech speedboat in his off time.
