Recap / Pokémon S5E27 "Rage of Innocence"

Go To

Japanese Title: Red Gyarados's Anger!

Original Airdate: February 14, 2002

US Airdate: February 22, 2003

The twerps have been trapped by Team Rocket, who are continuing their nefarious plot to induce evolution on Pokémon. There's just one problem: they left Jessie and James to guard them. Can Ash, Misty, and Brock escape and re-join Lance in the fight?

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Bond Villain Stupidity: Why would Team Rocket have the Rocket Trio anywhere near this plan?
  • Continuity Nod: This continues the anime's use of the Lake of Rage plot from the games.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: This episode has the first appearance of Pryce, the Mahogany Gym leader.
  • Meaningful Name: The English title is a reference to the term "Age of Innocence".
  • The Meddling Kids Are Useless: Considering the fact that Lance was the one to destroy Team Rocket's base, capture the lead grunt, and stop Gyarados's rampage, there really wasn't much point to Ash and the others being there apart from the fact they're the main characters.
  • Shout-Out: Explicit real world references had mostly died down by now, but we still get this, after Lance introduces himself as a Pokémon G-Man.
    Jessie: I don’t care if you’re a G-Man, a B-Man or a He-Man, you’re soon to be an X-Man.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Team Rocket literally had to do nothing and the twerps wouldn't have escaped. Instead they open the cage to attack them with Arbok and then accidentally undo the shackles constraining the twerps.
