While Ash and friends deliberate on how to pass through a tunnel replete with Onix, two wandering Pokémon — Snubbull and Jigglypuff — arrive on the scene together and take a strong enough dislike to each other to threaten drawing everyone else into their conflict.
Tropes
- Drama-Preserving Handicap: Team Rocket goes after the twerps in this episode because they need to steal a water-type to fight their way past the Onix in the tunnel. For this conflict to exist, Victreebel's grass-type moves had to be rendered useless against them, despite having an equal advantage normally.
- Mugging the Monster: Snubbull is none too happy that she was drawn on. When she finds Jigglypuff drawing on a Pidgey it put to sleep, she grabs the microphone marker and runs away.
- Out of Order: Ash mentions he no longer has Squirtle. In the US, this episode aired before "The Fire-ing Squad" where Ash gave it up.
- Rule of Three: Team Rocket set up three Pit Traps with Jigglypuff falling in all three of them.
- Schmuck Bait: Ash and his friends have finally realized that unexplained plates of fruit always lead to a Pit Trap. Unfortunately, Jigglypuff takes the bait instead.
- 10-Minute Retirement: Meowth is temporarily kicked out of Team Rocket due to his distaste for Snubbull.
- Wimp Fight: Snubbull and Jigglypuff get into a slap fight.
