Another day at the Cerise Lab begins with Ash and Goh having breakfast, being joined by Ren and his Magnemite named Francois. A temporary power outage turns into a full-blown crisis when Magnemite around Vermillion City, including Francois, begin going on a rampage. Joined by Ren, Ash and Goh attempt to figure out what's causing all of this while avoiding the rampaging Pokemon. Along the way, Ren and Magnemite's past is finally revealed.
This episode contains the following tropes:
- Ambiguous Situation: Stated In-Universe by the Narrator, who questions if the malfunctioning space satellite caused the magnetic flux that made the Magnemite attempt to evolve into a new form.
- Chekhov's Gun: Francois refuses to eat any electricity from anything that isn't old fashioned, including Pikachu, much to his disappointment. When the other Magnemite start to merge, Ren has Ash ask Pikachu to use Thunderbolt, knowing that every other Magnemite but Francois will take interest, saving it from being lost forever.
- A Day in the Limelight: The episode focuses on Ren and Francois.
- Meaningful Name: It turns out that Francois got its name from the very cafe it spent a good chunk of time at.
- The Reveal: Ren met Francois at the "Francois Cafe" during his studies, and took custody of it when the shop closed.
- Undying Loyalty: In the past, after Ren took Francois in, the little magnet was so depressed about not being able to eat electricity from its favorite chandelier that it ran off when Ren opened the screen door during a snowfall. When Ren spent all night tracking it down, even getting soaked and numb hands in the process, Francois was touched by the gesture and remained by his side since. Even in the present when Ren saves it from forcibly evolving with the other Magnemite into a new form, the man takes a full electric shock to snap his friend out its trance.
- The Unreveal: The Magnemite around Vermillion City begin to merge into an entirely new evolved form, but Ash, Goh, and Ren stop it before it can, making it unclear what it would have become.
