- May's Skitty and her fully-evolved Venasaur, along with Zoe's Shellos, are seen duking it out in their respective contest victories.
- Later does one of the legendary trio of Sinnoh, Azelf, appear as a silhouette before Ash's eyes.
- Call-Back: Jessie disguises herself as a reporter—the same disguise she used during the Kanto Grand Festival. It's specifically mentioned that she helped out at that event.
- Curb Stomp Cushion: Though Kyle's Lanturn is able to give Buizel a hard time with its electric type attacks, Buizel still puts up a pretty good fight.
- Hoist by His Own Petard: Buizel is able to turn his Aqua Jet into a moving projectile made out of solid ice thanks to Lanturn's own Ice Beam attack.
- Hope Spot: Ash seemingly gets the upper hand against Kyle when he uses Lanturn's Ice Beam to turn Buizel's Aqua Jet into an Ice Aqua Jet, but he can't overcome the type disadvantage and narrowly loses out.
- Oh, Crap!: Kyle when he sees Buizel charge headfirst into Lanturn's Ice Beam to make Buizel's Aqua Jet into an Ice Aqua Jet.
