Carrying on their journey through the Grand Desert, Flash and his friends encounter an old friend as they head to a mine.

  • Bat Out of Hell: One of the threats that the group encounters is a horde consisting of a hundred Noibats.
  • Big Creepy-Crawlies: Another threat encountered by Derpy and Doc are a swarm of Beedrills.
  • The Bus Came Back: Derpy returns in this chapter to help guide Flash's group through the Grand Desert's canyons, heading to the same mine that they are traveling to.
  • Cheaters Never Prosper: Played for Laughs at the beginning. The ground decides to play a game of I Spy, with Twilight saying she spies something beginning with S. Spike quickly realizes she is using a scientific term that only she would think of. Twilight tries to deny this, very badly, and Flash disqualifies her when they realize she was thinking of "sedimentary rock" and Doc had already guessed "stone" earlier.
  • Dope Slap: Twilight smacks Spike across the head for calling Swirlutz a "weirdo".
  • Guest-Star Party Member: After everyone regroups, Derpy agrees to accompany Flash's group as he moves to Appaloosa and prepares for his fifth Gym battle.
  • It's All My Fault: Swirlutz blames herself for getting the group separated when it accidentally caused Tockwork to wake up hundreds of Noibat and then caused the cave to collapse with a Psybeam. Derpy tries to reassure it that she wasn't at fault.
  • Not-So-Innocent Whistle: Twilight does this when everyone figures out her cheating during their game and shoot death glares at her.
  • Took a Level in Badass:
    • Derpy reveals that her Swirleye evolved into a Swirlutz, an unorthodox Pokémon who is good at absorbing damage.
    • In its fight with the Beedrill, Doc's Steeledge evolves into a Flitanium.
