Tropes for the episode:

  • Alas, Poor Villain: Groves's death.
  • And There Was Much Rejoicing: The other prisoners are highly amused by Beecher's attack on Schillinger.
  • Asshole Victim: Schillinger is quite literally this when Beecher defecates on his face.
  • Bully Hunter: Augustus protects Eugene Dobbins from being physically harmed by Vahue.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The cellist Dobbins mentions having no one to play music with; Augustus later arranges for someone to play the trumpet with him.
  • Driven to Suicide: After Mershah rats Said out, several members of the Muslim gang lose their privileges after being found with weapons. This leads to Said casting Mershah out, and he becomes a pariah, and eventually kills himself.
  • Enemy Mine: Ryan and Ross decide to work together and recruit Adebisi in case they need help against the Muslims during the riot.
  • Evil Gloating: Ryan does this to Nino as he's dying.
  • For the Evulz: There's no logical reasoning for Ryan to give the dinner intended to kill Nino to Dobbins.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Smith dies protecting Glynn from Groves.
  • Hidden Depths: Hunt shows a surprising amount of guilt for possibly having killed a man.
  • Kick the Dog:
    • Vahue destroys Dobbins's cello for no reason besides jealousy.
    • Kenny torments Rebadow For the Evulz.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Groves breaks down in tears of remorse after he's visited by Smith's mother. He tries to make it up to her by having Mukada record his final words in the hope it will make her feel better, but there's a problem with the radio and no one who could have potentially heard bothered to listen.
  • Nothing Personal: Groves tells Glynn he has nothing against him.
  • Nice Girl: Mrs. Smith comforts the man who killed her son before his death.
  • Nice Guy: Mukada does his best to be there for Groves.
  • Police Brutality: The guards decide to take out their frustrations about Smith's death on random prisoners who had nothing to do with the murder.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: McManus knows Beecher wouldn't have attacked Schillinger without sufficient provocation and chooses Schillinger as the one to be moved out of Em City.
