Recap / Our Flag Means Death S1E07: "This Is Happening"

Go To

Ed tells Stede that he is planning to leave the Revenge for other adventures, as a ship can't have more than one captain. Stede is taken aback by this, but before the two can discuss it further, they are interrupted by Roach, who informs Stede that the Swede has scurvy and the ship is out of oranges to treat it. Stede docks at St. Augustine to restock, but finds that the local orange crop has been wiped out by a blight and gets distracted by buying a treasure map.

Jim, who is from St. Augustine, begrudgingly agrees to lead a search for oranges. Jim is angry at Olu for making them join the mission, but Olu points out that he has no way of knowing why Jim hates St. Augustine because Jim doesn't tell their friends anything about themself. The group finds an orange tree outside of a church belonging to Jim's nana, a nun who raised Jim and trained them to be a killer after their family was slaughtered by a gang of bandits called the Siete Gallos. She agrees to give the pirates her oranges in exchange for repairing a broken wall on the property.

Stede leads a reluctant Ed and Lucius on a treasure hunt. Lucius observes a flirtatious interaction between Stede and Ed and realizes that the two are falling for each other. When the treasure map is accidentally destroyed, Lucius privately lectures Ed about how Stede put together the whole outing because he's worried about not being exciting enough for Ed, and Ed needs to respect that instead of worrying about looking cool. Ed comforts Stede about the loss of the map and convinces him that the remaining scraps have enough information to finish the hunt.

Nana is disappointed in Jim after they tell her that they've only killed a single member of the Siete Gallos. Jim runs away and returns to their family's abandoned homestead, followed by Oluwande. Jim tells Olu more about their past and shows him a dead orange tree that their parents planted when they were born. Olu tells Jim he could be their new family, and they almost kiss before being interrupted by Stede, who digs for treasure at the base of the dead tree. He finds a petrified orange, which Jim tells him to keep. The crew returns to the Revenge with Nana's oranges in tow, but Jim stays behind, telling Olu that Nana was right and they need to find the rest of the Siete Gallos. Ed and Stede discuss the idea of co-captaining the ship. In the Republic of Pirates, Izzy and Spanish Jackie offer to help Chauncey Badminton catch Stede.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Almost Kiss: Jim and Olu lean in for a kiss on the grounds of Jim's old home, right before Stede barges in on them.
  • Everyone Can See It: Lucius comments on how obvious Stede and Ed's affection for each other is.
  • It's the Journey That Counts: Parodied. After Stede accepts that there's no buried treasure, Lucius suggests that the real treasure was the day they spent together. Stede irritably points out that they spend every day together since they live on the same ship.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Badminton of course understands none of what Jackie's talking about.
    Badminton: What's he to you?
Jackie: He broke my nose jar, and one of his crew killed my favorite husband.
Badminton: I didn't follow any of that.
  • Shutting Up Now: At the end of his What the Hell, Hero? rant to Ed, Lucius realizes he just berated one of the most dangerous pirates in the world and shuts up, telling Ed, "...You can stab me in the face now."
  • Title Drop: Lucius giddily utters the episode title as he realizes that Ed and Stede are flirting over their lunch of roasted snake. Also serves as an audience stand-in for the revelation that the romance is going to be official, not just queer-baiting subtext.
Oh my god, this is happening.
  • Treasure Map: Parodied. Stede spends a lot of money on a treasure map sold by a random woman and insists on taking Ed on an adventure in an attempt to keep his attention and keep him around. Ed and Lucius come along, complain the whole time, and it ends predictably anticlimactically when the treasure map is accidentally burned. However, when Ed starts to play along, they do end up finding a substitute for the treasure in a petrified orange buried under Jim's family's tree.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Lucius gives one to Ed when Ed is less than amused by Stede's "treasure-hunting" trip:
I said don't be a DICK, okay, 'cause he's put together this whole outing for you. Look, you're very cool and you wear leather, so you maybe you won't understand this, but everyone is worried all of the time about whether or not they're interesting or adventurous enough for you. And that bizarre little man over there likes you very much, and you like him, and if you can't get over yourself enough to realize that, then you're going to end up another leather-clad, middle-aged sad sack dying alone in a puddle of his own piss. ...You can stab me in the face now.
