It's the morning after and everyone is reeling. Suzanne, after her fight with Maureen at the guards' behest, is awake but unresponsive. Healy's not doing much better. Piscatella forces Red to work early, despite keeping her awake and tormenting her. The White Power inmates approach the black inmates to bring down Humphreys. When they enlist the Latinas, they realize it's Piscatella they have to bring down. Poussey and Brooke seek some alone time in Lolly's time machine. Caputo confronts the guards about their insubordination. Yoga Jones berates herself for the way she's behaved. Sophia returns. Boo and Pennsatucky reconcile. Conditions at the prison keep deteriorating, and Fig lets it slip that more inmates are on their way.
This episode provides examples of the following tropes:
- A Day in the Limelight : We see some of Bayley's back story.
- Blatant Lies : When Bayley asks Coates if he's ever "been tempted."
- Bury Your Gays: Poussey is killed.
- Character Death: Poussey is unintentionally choked/crushed to death whilst trying to defend Suzanne from a guard.
- A Death in the Limelight: Inverted. Bayley's backstory is revealed and he accidently kills Poussey at the end of the episode.
- Enemy Mine : The heads of the various groups in Litchfield come together. Of course it all falls apart in negotiations.
- Gaslighting : The word that Morello is looking for when she calls Vince and he realizes she's nuts.
- Get Out!: Caputo tells Bayley to do something better with his life than working at a place like Litchfield.
- Once an Episode: Averted. The standard Fade To Orange that occurs is placed with a Fade to Black, as Poussey has been killed.
- Pet the Dog : Gloria attempts this when Sophia returns to Litchfield. It doesn't go well at first. It goes better for Caputo, who apologizes to Fig.
- Racist Grandma : One of the White Power inmates has one.
- Running Gag : Morello's "detective work."
- Scare 'Em Straight : The sheriff messes with Bayley and his friends when they're brought in for trespassing and loitering on the water tower.Don't be stupid next time.
- Shout-Out : A group of high schoolers drinking beer on the water tower? That sounds familiar.
- And to Dead Poets Society, sort of.
- Strawman Has a Point : While Piscatella's methods are questionable and possibly illegal, he managed to find and punish the person they were looking for.
- On the other hand, his methods had nothing to do with how they found the guilty party.
- "The Reason You Suck" Speech : Boo gives one to Coates, even though the person he actually harmed is over it.
- Waxing Lyrical : We gotta fight the powers that be.
- Wham Episode: Whew! Poussey dies.
