Shelly (Cynthia Geary) finds out she is pregnant, and her much older beau Holling Vincoeur (John Cullum) proposes. Since Holling's former best friend Maurice is still bitter over Shelly leaving him for Holling, Shelly nominates Dr. Fleischman to be the best man, forcing him into close contact with maid of honor Maggie. Shelly's father, noticeably younger than Holling, comes to town, and makes no secret of the fact that he wishes Shelly had stayed with Maurice.

Meanwhile, Japanese investors hoping to build a resort on the Alaskan Riviera visit town. Joel realizes they will need a full-time staff physician, and offers to help Maurice court them in exchange for a reduction in the time he must serve in Cicely. Learning that they are fans of golf, Joel builds a course on top of a mountain. Shelly's impending wedding to Holling has rattled Maurice, who brought Shelly to Cicely in the first place after seeing her in a pageant he was judging.

Holling leaves Shelly at the altar, and when he shows up at the tavern the next day claiming to have been fishing the whole time, Shelly hurls a glass at his head. As Holling explains to Joel while he tends to his head wound, both his father and grandfather lived to be over 100 years old, but their wives both died in their 40s, cursing them to live long lives as widowers. Joel points out that Holling and Shelly's age difference makes this unlikely to happen again, but Holling is convinced that he is cursed.

Nevertheless, the wedding is back on, and Shelly visits Maurice to make peace and have him sing at the wedding. While he is still in love with her, he gets over it to sing "Hello, Young Lovers" at the wedding. As Chris, who got ordained from an ad he saw in Rolling Stone, asks the couple to recite their vows, Holling once again gets cold feet and asks Shelly to talk to him outside. While he promises to love her and their child forever, he can't get married. She accepts, and they drive away, leaving the guests to party.

Maurice tells Joel that the Japanese investors passed, and without a drainage system, the golf course will soon begin to mildew. To make matters worse, Joel's fiancee Elaine doesn't pick up the phone. He walks the streets of town, and makes contact with a moose.
