Jess: I didn't really know your dad, except for that one hour when I committed fraud with him.
Nick: That's all there is to know.
Nick: That's all there is to know.
Following Nick's father's death, the roommates travel to Chicago for the funeral.
Tropes in this episode:
- Dysfunctional Family: Nick's family turns out to be a little crazy, as Winston puts it. His father was a conman who was in and out; his brother and mother are so incompetent that Nick is the responsible one.
- Elvis Impersonator: Invoked; Nick's mother demands an Elvis impersonator at the funeral. They turn out to be expensive; Nick initially settles for getting a drunk at the bar to do it before Jess takes matters into her own hands and does it herself.]
- The "Fun" in "Funeral": Walt's funeral includes Schmidt getting too into putting his face near the corpse, Jess's Elvis impersonation and musical number, and Winston having an exaggerated breakdown at the podium.
- Mortality Phobia: Schmidt turns out to have a serious fear of death and almost doesn't go to the funeral because of Walt's corpse. Getting into a spat with one of Nick's relatives puts his face too close to the dead body, which causes him to get over it.
- Why Are You Not My Son?: Walt evidently liked Winston more than his actual son Nick.Winston: Yeah, but he loved me more than he loved you. He told me that.
Nick: Yeah, he told me that too, actually.
