My Superhero City | Season 01, Episode 02: Hide Behind an Empty Face

Mari: I'm sure we could make this deal work out successfully, couldn't we? As I stated earlier, I have a large following. In fact, it is almost reaching the 5 million follower milestone. I could advertise your products in vlogs and posts. There will definitely be a lot of people who'll be interested in your products.
Emily Blackburn: I was... registered... last month, actually. With the... giants. The attack. Displacement. Um... I was... assigned to... to Squad 3. I... didn't find the time to show up—I was busy. I... Did I... I'm not late, am I? I can still... uh...
Mari: Ahem. I am more than just the lass who took down your 'oh so precious' ship, you know.
Zach: It's always scary when you're going to be coming back to a place like this, after an incident like that. But...one little note of advice. It helps to have anchors around. By which I mean, something to keep you grounded. Every single time I had an episode, my wife Yoko was there for me. Calming me, keeping me down. After a while, it started getting easier to have the episode pass if I just reminded myself that it wasn't real, wasn't happening, and someone I dearly, dearly love was right there if I needed it.
Holiday: Horrible and humiliating things? As if I'd let you...Maybe it's a sign that you shouldn't be figuring it out.
Iris: Oh... crap. I don't want to alarm anyone, but the building is surrounded by zombies... and a lot of them are looking at Dante. Dammit, I'm supposed to be the creepiest thing around...
Mari: This is an important matter! I cannot display my Steve Rogers skills if I become as uncool as a wet poodle!
Zach: Oh no you don't, I didn't jump back into this life style so I could just get left behind.
Martin: Well then, guess its time to go...I'm not all that great at romantic gestures, I never really know what to get on anniversary's or holidays. And frankly in terms of charm or smooth lines you'd probably get more from a chatbot...But there is a massive army of zombies and some sort of wizard who can control storms and I can't help but think...Mahvash, would you do me the honor of dancing with me?
Martin: But, I can't help but feel that all of this was too...perfect. Hoard of zombies and an attack from a high class villain. Big proper setup and enough firepower to make it hurt. But before it can go wrong Saint appears to save the day just in the nick of time like he is known for. Life isn't as pretty as that, no matter how much we wish otherwise. So I can't help but think, if someone with enough power to throw around calling himself Saint appears in such a way to make any doubt that the worlds greatest hero is back, how can I do anything but doubt it?

  • Short Synopsis: The heroes take some time to get to know each other—even squad 4 forms a couple cliques—and then storm clouds roll in. No literally storm clouds roll in.

Tropes - Caution, unmarked spoilers

  • The Alcoholic: Besides being introduced knocking back drinks, drinking seems to be Octavius's main response to any kind of stress. And the sunrise. And having free time.
  • All for Nothing: Mahvash frames Saint's return as this. His very existence may try and drag things back to his old order, invalidating alot work done since then.
  • Corporate-Sponsored Superhero: Mari is adding another sponsorship to her portfolio when the episode opens.
  • Eldritch Location: The way Iris 'teleports'.
  • He's Back!: A living Saint reappears before the students at the end of Darkheart's attack to the amazement of many and the chagrin of some.
  • Game Changer: Saint sells himself as this.
  • Night of the Living Mooks: Darkheart surrounds the Foundation HQ with zombies. Contrary to genre convention, everyone lives.
  • Something We Forgot: Technically retconned in but Emily did not join the giant battle because no one specifically told her to.
  • Too Clever by Half: Being so delays the IW's response time considerably. They look for a 'main force' sneaking around covered by the 'diversion' of so many zombies. Or expect to see someone trying to Ninja in Tess style. Or even consider the zombies bait to lure the students into cursed rains. It never occurs to them that the Villain of the Week is simply pathetic and crying out for attention and 'Zerg Rush till you notice me!' was his strategy.
  • Elaborate Underground Base: Martin discovered a number of these after giant feet went smashing through Super City. He's clearing them out and Mahvash is sizing them up for pre-fabricated housing when the next threat appears.
