Iida: I was in third place at the sports festival! I'll show everyone the strong spirit of a successor!

"Match Three" is the 95th episode of the My Hero Academia series and the seventh episode of the fifth season.

All spectators and combatants from the previous round take a break as the location of the training changes due to all the damage Class B caused to the area. Meanwhile, Midoriya, Bakugo, and All Might discuss what happened in Midoriya's One For All dream. Elsewhere, Endeavor is seen on duty and is impatiently awaiting a response from his son Todoroki. Back at the new training site, Tetsutetsu attracts Class A to have a direct confrontation, however, as predicted, Todoroki traps all four members of the B-team with his signature ice wall move. Honenuki then comes to rescue his teammates, beginning their counterattack on Class A.

Tropes in this episode:

  • After-Action Patch-Up: An unconscious Yaoyorozu is taken to the infirmary to get treated by Recovery Girl which happens off-screen but still leaves a kiss mark on her cheek.
  • Combination Attack: Called "Horn Dash Hammer", the mixture of Tetsutetsu's Quirk and Pony's horn cannon super move allows Tetsutetsu to break through Todoroki's ice barrier and lunge himself toward the latter.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Komori feels bad for growing mushrooms in Tokoyami's throat from their earlier match and checks up on him as he's still coughing, but he flat out tells her he doesn't need her pity.
  • Fastball Special: Pony hurls Tetsutetsu at Todoroki's ice wall, which he breaks through, then punches him with his steel fist, creating the "Horn Dash Hammer" combo attack.
  • Flechette Storm: Pony throws multiple horns at Shoji to keep him in place.
  • Foreign-Language Tirade: The original/subtitled version has Pony randomly say "Jeez! Don't keep us in the dark like that!" in English when she's frustrated by Tetsutetsu's Leeroy Jenkins attitude, which, as Kaibara explains, is a sign that she's really angry.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: Honenuki turns his back on Iida, thinking he's neutralized him by trapping him in Shoto's ice after his Recipro Burst runs out. Iida casually reveals he's no longer bound by that time limit and shatters the ice
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Tetsutetsu's method of dealing with Class A is fighting them "to death" with no strategies or "cheap tricks" involved. He deliberately starts smashing up the arena to draw the 1-A students to their position, not long after the students were warned to limit collateral damage.
Vlad King: Okay, maybe I should start shouting directly in the kid's face.
  • Look What I Can Do Now!: On the advice of his older brother, Iida ripped off his old mufflers so that stronger ones would grow back in their place - which appeared to be exceptionally painful, but now means instead of ten seconds on Recipro, he has ten minutes.
  • Negated Moment of Awesome: Just as Iida is about his Recipro Burst move and attack the restrained Class B team, Honenuki quickly stops it by softening the ice-covered ground he's running on and freeing his teammates, turning the tables on Class A. Complete with an abrupt soundtrack change, of course.
  • Sneeze Cut: Endeavor, seeing that Todoroki is completely ignoring his messages, yells out his name in frustration. The scene then cuts to Todoroki sneezing as he gets ready for the match.
  • Technologically Blind Elders: It's only implied, but Endeavor sends incomplete sentences, such as sending "Are you well? Let's" then sending the full "Let's Talk" afterward, through the messaging app he uses to contact Todoroki. Not that Todoroki ever replies. Or reads them.
  • Troubled Backstory Flashback: Another flashback to the Training from Hell Todoroki received from his father is shown twice, once from Todoroki's p.o.v and the other is from his father's. Although this time, Endeavor wants to teach him the same technique properly and within reason, unlike his old abusive methods.
