Recap / My Hero Academia S4E24 "Japanese Hero Billboard Chart"

Go To

Watch Class 1-A is visited by the Wild Wild Pussycats, Japan watches as several Pro Heroes have risen the ranks to fill the void All Might left behind. Endeavor officially takes his spot as the new #1, and is later recruited by the #2 Hero, Hawks, for a special assignment.

Tropes in this episode:

  • The Baby of the Bunch: Hawks is mentioned to have become one of the top 10-rated heroes in Japan within six months of opening his own agency.
  • Check, Please!: Upon finding out Hawks has no proof about Nomu presence, Endeavor immediately stands up and calls for the check.
  • A Day in the Limelight: The episode drops the school setting after the Pussycats' visit with Class 1-A and focuses on Endeavor's newly found position as #1 Hero.
    • To an extent, we also take a glimpse at old and new Pro Heroes in Japan, including the rest of the Top 10.
  • Excuse Me While I Multitask: Hawks carries on a conversation with Endeavor while strolling down the street, while also stopping a villain from causing a terrorist attack, saving a dog that ran into traffic, and helping a lady with her luggage. He doesn't even appear to be looking at what he's doing.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Two for Hawks. At the JP Hero Billboard Chart event, he snatches the microphone out of Edgeshot's hand and starts pointing out how the empty speeches aren't going to put anyone at ease, rubs his higher approval ratings in Endeavor's face, and generally makes a nuisance of himself...and then hands the microphone to Endeavor. Later in the episode, he shows exactly why he's a top 10-ranked hero by using his powers to do a half-dozen things while walking down the street and talking with Endeavor and filling him in on information about rumors of Nomu that are popping up all over the nation.
  • Nothing Is the Same Anymore: The Hero Rankings in Japan face a massive shift ever since All Might's retirement, and it becomes another sign of this trope. Many heroes introduced at the start of the series have made it to the Top 20, and a few move up to the Top 10. With All Might stepping down since his battle against All For One, his rival Endeavor has become the #1 Hero after years of trying to catch up, and now has the responsibility to be the kind of hero people look up to.
  • Popularity Power: Even though Best Jeanist is missing in action since the raid in Season 3, he remains in the Top 10 thanks to approval ratings. Likewise, the Wild Wild Pussycats have been inactive at that time since Ragdoll lost her Quirk, but they only dropped from #23 to #411 instead the #1000s because they have plenty of fans awaiting their return.
  • Post-Injury Desk Job: Until Ragdoll can find a way to restore her Quirk without giving the imprisoned All For One an advantage, she has to help her Wild Wild Pussycat allies from behind the scenes as an "Office Cat".
  • Spotting the Thread: Endeavor is initially less than impressed with Hawks' investigation and lack of proof about Nomu, until Hawks points out that the lack of proof is a sign of something - there are rumors across the country in unconnected locations of Nomu sightings, but no proof anywhere, which means someone's spreading rumors deliberately to stir up panic.
  • Stunned Silence: Hawks interrupting the other heroes talking at Billboard Chart event has this effect on the audience.
  • Time to Step Up, Commander: Hawks points out that Endeavor is officially the Number 1 Pro Hero and while the people don't necessarily need a shiny icon, the pro heroes do need an effective leader, and Endeavor needs to step up.
  • We Want Our Jerk Back!: When Endeavor attempts to be friendly to a fan (having seen how personable Hawks was and already trying to reform his image) the fan immediately cries that Endeavor isn't cool anymore.
