Tropes

  • Alliterative Name: Referenced at the beginning, as the L key on Jessica's typewriter breaks and she laments naming her main characters Lola and Larry Lamont.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Several.
    • A student in the computer school is first seen upset at the Victim of the Week Alan Miller. It becomes a clue later.
    • Jason O'Connell, a businessman and fellow student in the computer school, laments to Jessica that his business is struggling because their competition seem to come up with projects very similar to his own. Turns out, they're being leaked via his computer. Jessica and Jason use this to set up a trap later.
    • Derek St. James installed Jessica's computer at her apartment and showed her how it connects to the phone line. This plays an important plot point later.
  • Loony Fan: When Jessica pays Michael's family a visit, an overly dressed woman then "drops by" and asks Jessica if she could sign a few autographs for her books. As Jessica reluctantly says yes, the house is soon swarmed by screaming and excited J.B. Fletcher fans.
  • Shout-Out: The company that Jessica goes to learn to use her computer is the "Serious Cybernetics Corporation", a reference to the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
  • Technology Marches On: In-universe. After her typewriter gets broken, Jessica purchases a brand new computer. She is amazed at the wonders of using a word processor, such as being able to edit her piece when having typos and also sending finished chapters to her editor instantly via phone connection.
