Recap / Murder She Wrote S 5 E 18 Trevor Hudsons Legacy

Go To

While attending a celebration on the estate of deceased author Trevor Hudson for the posthumous release of his last novel, Jessica discovers Bob Jarrett, one of her former students, is the actual writer of the book and Hudson's heirs are claiming it for their own. Unfortunately, what starts out as a case of plagiarism evolves into murder when Bob is killed with no shortage of likely suspects on the Hudson Ranch.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Based on a Great Big Lie: Trevor Hudson's last novel, considered his greatest, isn't his. Bob Jarrett wrote the entire thing, while Maria Hudson lies about all the "unwritten" notes her father left behind that made the book up.
  • Evil Matriarch: Maria Hudson is basically the head of the Hudson Family following Trevor's death, and will do anything to preserve her father's legacy. Though she's nowhere near as bad as her daughter Cat, who was willing to murder Bob to protect Trevor's name.
  • Offscreen Karma: The ending implies that Cat and Sheriff Hank's murder of Bob and plot to kill Adam will lead to the truth about Bob being the actual writer of Trevor Hudson's novel, which will ruin the Hudson Family's name and reputation.
  • Plagiarism in Fiction: The episode is based on the fact that Trevor Hudson had almost nothing written for his supposed last novel before he died, so Bob Jarrett was expected to write the entire thing and get quietly paid off for doing so. It doesn't help that Maria Hudson keeps lying about how her father had left scores of oral passages she'd supposedly memorized. While it's not so much the case that the Hudsons are trying to steal Bob's work, it's that they're claiming Bob put the novel together from Trevor's leftover notes and recordings into a coherent volume and he doesn't feel comfortable about allowing them to lie about this.
  • Token Good Teammate: Olivia and her husband Andrew appear to have the most morals out of the Hudson Family, with Andrew even helping Jessica stop Sheriff Hank from killing Adam as a patsy for Bob's death.
