Tropes

  • Alternate Dimension: The first of many on this show. It's apparently the same way that Rita imprisoned Zordon in a time warp. We never really hear much else about how it happened.
  • Behemoth Battle: Tyrannosaurus Dinozord vs. the Giant.
  • Cool Versus Awesome: A mechanical dinosaur against a medieval titan; what more needs saying?
  • Dem Bones: The monster-of-the-week Bones.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness:
    • For one, Rita sends out another monster immediately after her first fails and the second is already giant. While this would crop up in later seasons, it can be jarring to see it in only the second episode of the entire series. Of course, they had to work with the footage they had.
    • The pinwheel technique that Zack, Jason, and Kimberly use on the Putties; future civilian battles wouldn't have as extravagant moves for better or worse.
  • Epic Fail:
    • When cornered by a single foot soldier, Billy tries to morph due to his Non-Action Guy status only to clumsily drop his morpher. He inexplicably gets it back after the putty fight.
    • Bulk's attempt to climb the rope at the beginning.
  • Face Your Fears: Trini's subplot in this episode forces her to confront her fear of heights when Billy flees up a cliffside to escape a putty.
  • Innocuously Important Episode: Billy invents the Wrist Communicators, which also allows them to teleport.
  • Jump Scare: In-universe, Zack gives one to Trini by sneaking up on her while wearing a skull mask.
  • The Load: Billy, during the Putty fight. Thankfully it doesn't last and he even makes up for it a little later on when he figures out they need to destroy Bones' head to permanently defeat him.
  • Losing Your Head: The Rangers destroy Bones' skull.
  • Monster of the Week: Bones and the Giant.
  • Non-Action Guy: Billy shows us how green he was at the start of the show when he has to flee from just one putty out of the whole group forcing Trini to bail him out, plus see Epic Fail. He thankfully grows out it in later episodes.
  • Our Giants Are Bigger: Rita summons a giant knight.
  • The Prankster: Zack shows off his mischievous side by putting on a skull mask to spook Trini. Jason of all people also shows it when he clutches Billy in his legs...while swinging from a climbing rope!
  • Silent Antagonist: The giant has no dialogue aside for some grunting.
  • "What Do They Fear?" Episode: For Trini.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Trini is fearful of heights. She's forced to face it down to aid Billy.
