Recap / M*A*S*H S6E12: Comrades in Arms, Pt. 1

Go To

Hawkeye and Margaret are headed to the 8063 MASH to demonstrate the new arterial graft technique they've learned and the new clamp they developed. However the 8063 bugs out before they arrive, leaving them stranded behind enemy lines. They try to head back to the 4077, but they run first into engine trouble with their Jeep, then into enemy trouble, as they're forced to hide by the road as a North Korean patrol takes their Jeep. Tired and hungry, they find a deserted hut to spend the night in. They're awakened by shellfire, but shells aren't the only thing that's igniting between them...

Attention, all personnel! Major Houlihan and Captain Pierce are trapped behind enemy lines! Keep an eye out for them, as well as for the following tropes:

  • Call-Back:
  • Continuity Nod: When Hawkeye and Margaret come upon the deserted hut, Margaret's impressed Hawkeye, of all people, would know the hut is probably used as a spotting reference for artillery fire (and would therefore be likely not to get hit), as she didn't think he'd know anything military. Turns out he saw it in a movie, and we already know Hawkeye remembers a lot he's seen from movies.
    • Overlaps with Actor Allusion. Prior to his Hollywood career, Alan Alda served in the Army Reserves as an artillery officer, even being deployed to post-war Korea for a while. So naturally, Hawkeye would know something about artillery practices.
  • Flirting Under Fire: As they're trapped in the hut and shells are raining down, Hawkeye and Margaret cling to each other in terror, shouting uselessly at whoever's doing the shelling to stop. Then in the middle of shouting they start making out...
  • Got Volunteered: Potter asks for one of the surgeons to volunteer to demonstrate an arterial transplant at the 8063rd, but Hawkeye was always going to be the one to do it.
    • Averted with Margaret, who immediately volunteers to go with Hawkeye to the 8063rd, though it's as much to keep Hawkeye away from her nurses as it is because she's always willing to go on missions like this.
  • Hollywood Tone-Deaf: Hawkeye and B.J. deliberately sing badly in the shower.
Winchester: Do you realize that you are singing two entirely different operas, and they are both out of tune?
  • Hysterical Woman: Margaret is this in spades during the shelling and after they learn the 8063rd had bugged out.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Margaret is eager to down some of Hawkeye's Japanese Whiskey.
Margaret: So how good could that be?
Hawkeye: How good does it have to be?
    Margaret: Give me the bottle.
  • I Need to Go Iron My Dog: Hawkeye is more than ready to leave when Winchester shouts out that Hawkeye stole his caviar.
  • Stepford Smiler: Margaret tries this in response to the letter from her husband to another woman. It doesn't last.
