Recap / Martha Speaks S 1 E 30 Raiders Of The Lost Art

Go To

We begin with T.D. in a suit showing off artworks and explaining that the vocabulary is about wrongdoings. Then, Helen arrives at school and, despite being told not to, Skits follows her in. The janitor sees him and tells him off for breaking the no-dogs rule, then shoos him out.

In class, the art teacher enters with a papier mache sculpture of his head, and Helen is excited, but T.D. doesn't like art class since he feels he "make[s] too many mistakes". The art teacher says that in his classes, there is no such thing as making a mistake, and gives the assignment: to draw something they see every day. Helen draws Martha, while T.D. draws the back of the head of their classmate Chuck Smith. He also draws the art teacher's head on a duck's body, but keeps that drawing a secret.

Helen goes home, with T.D. tagging along to visit, and finds Truman playing with her dogs. Helen tells Martha about her picture, but can't show Martha, as the art teacher (whose name is Mr. Vadinchi) has taken it to hang on the wall. T.D. then goes to show the dogs and Truman his joke drawing, but pulls out the drawing of Chuck Smith. This shocks Helen and T.D., since it means he accidentally gave Mr. Vadinchi the duck drawing. T.D. is at a loss for what to do, but Helen thinks he should just apologise and swap the drawings in person.

He's afraid to, but Helen and Truman drag him to school. They look through the window and see Mr. Vadinchi inspecting the drawings, but they also see that he hasn't seen T.D.'s drawing yet. Unfortunately, Mrs. Clusky enters right as T.D. was about to enter and swap the drawings, but fortunately, she and Mr. Vadinchi leave to go to a ballgame, with the latter promising to continue going over the drawings the next day.

Helen, Martha, T.D., and Truman enter the school, only to find the janitor, who shoos the kids out for being at school after closing time and Martha out for being a dog. Then, he accidentally knocks the box of drawings into a recycling bin and wheels it off.

On the front steps, the kids are sad, but then T.D. gets the idea of building a fake school. However, Helen comes up with a better idea: have Truman and Martha watch for the janitor while the other two get the art. T.D. has Martha watch the door and Truman the windows, and he initially asks him to howl and her to whistle, but after both demonstrate incompetently, Helen switches the noises over. She and T.D. break in, and when they don't find the art on Mrs. Clusky's desk, they go into the hallway, narrowly avoiding the janitor several times.

Then, Truman, through the window, sees him throwing the trash, including the pictures, away, and whistles. Helen and T.D. run to find Truman, while the janitor mistakes the whistle for a bird and leaves to get a photo. He runs into the hallway, where Martha sees him and howls, but he mistakes her for a wolf and wants to take a photo of it too.

Helen and T.D. go into a classroom, then Martha howls, so Helen hides behind the teacher's desk, while T.D., spotting the drawings, hides in the bin. Meanwhile, the janitor has spotted some of Martha's fur, which scares him, since he believes it's wolf hair. T.D. grabs the duck picture, but then the janitor comes in, telling the kids to escape out the window from the "wolf". He then asks why they're there, believing T.D. to be attempting to put the drawings into the recycling bin. T.D. says he was taking them out, but the janitor doesn't believe him. Luckily, the janitor feels the "wolf" is more important, and shoos the kids out the window. Unfortunately, Martha shows up, overhearing the janitor talking about wolves and worrying that her howling will attract them. When he learns she'd been howling, the janitor realises that there isn't any wolf. He tries to put the three of them in trouble for being at school after closing time, but sends them home instead when Martha points out that they're already outside.

Helen, T.D., and Martha rendezvous with Truman, and T.D. reveals that he managed to grab the drawing. Then, the janitor tries to tell the rest of the school faculty about the incident, but they don't believe him.

This episode provides examples of

  • Accidental Misnaming: Mr. Vadinchi calls T.D., "P.C." and "C.D.".
  • Analogy Backfire: Helen says that he should just swap the drawings in front of Mr. Vadinchi and apologise to him in person, which would be unpleasant, but quick, like ripping off a band-aid. T.D., however, reveals that he's taking an awfully long time to peel off his three band-aids.
  • Canine Confusion: Skits vocalises while sneezing, which real life dogs don't do.
  • Department of Redundancy Department: The janitor describes dog hairs as "hairy".
  • Facepalm: The janitor puts his palm to his face when he's frustrated with himself for talking to Skits.
  • Fooled by the Sound: Martha (a domestic dog) howls to get Helen's attention. Mr. Stern the janitor hears her, but thinks it's a wolf that howled. Also, in the same episode T.D. whistles also to get Helen's attention, which Stern mistakes for a bird.
  • Go Mad from the Isolation: Discussed when Mrs. Clusky doesn't believe the janitor's story of a talking dog impersonating a wolf, and believes he's had "too much alone time".
  • Incredibly Lame Fun: Up until seeing Skits, the janitor enjoys his job to the point of singing.
  • Inevitably Broken Rule: Martha accompanies Helen, T.D., and Truman sneaking into the school, despite the no dogs allowed rule.
  • Job Song: The janitor sings about his job while working.
  • Ladies and Germs: T.D. addresses the audience as "Ladies and gentlemen, preschoolers of all ages."
  • Left the Background Music On: Wacky music plays during the chase scene... which then turns out to be from a walkman the janitor's listening to.
  • Mistaken for Insane: When the janitor claims to have seen a talking dog impersonating a wolf, Mrs. Clusky thinks he's gone insane from "too much alone time".
  • No Animals Allowed: The janitor doesn't allow dogs in the school because they may shed.
  • Oh, Crap!: Helen and T.D. are shocked when he pulls out the drawing of Chuck Smith's head, since that means he accidentally gave Mr. Vadinchi a drawing of him with the body of a duck.
  • Quacking Up: T.D. draws a duck with the head of Mr. Vadinchi as a joke.
  • Scooby-Dooby Doors: When Helen and T.D. try to avoid being seen by the janitor, everyone keeps going into and out of the doors in the hallway.
  • Shout-Out: The title references Raiders of the Lost Ark.
  • Space Whale Aesop: Discussed when the janitor believes there's a wolf in the school and tries to use it as a lesson to the kids on why they shouldn't be where they don't belong.
  • Spelling Song: The janitor sings, "J-A-N-I-T-O-R, it's the greatest job by far!".
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: A song similar to "Yakety Sax" (akaThe Benny Hill Show theme) plays when the kids are trying to hide from the janitor.
