A rainy day and a serious matter causes King to flash back to when he and Luz first began to get along.

Tropes that appear in this Chapter:

  • Big Brother Instinct: The flashbacks ultimately lead up to King developing this for an infant Luz, promising to be the best brother he can be to her.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Eda shows up just in time to drive off the pigs.
  • Cliffhanger: The events in the present end with Luz and King vowing to change Eda back to normal before showing the last of the flashback events.
  • Cue the Flying Pigs: Turns out there really are flying pigs on the Boiling Isles. Their snatching smaller creatures to eat is what leads to the Demon Hunters being ordered to exterminate the whole flock.
  • A Day in the Limelight: King gets his first focus chapter of the series.
  • From Bad to Worse: After King steals Mr. Snugglepuss from Lil' Luz, she started crying. Then when Hooty attempts to cheer her up, he swallows a fly and unintentionally scares her. Then he leaves to chase the fly, leaving the door open, resulting in Luz leaving the house and getting carried off by a flying pig. All in the course of 5 minutes.
  • The Ghost: Amity, who can't come tutor Luz because it's raining.
  • Infant Sibling Jealousy: In the past, King was annoyed by how much attention Luz got from Eda as a baby. He refused to share any of his stuffed animals, especially Mr. Snugglepuss, with her, which led to her kidnapping. While in the flying pigs' nest, he blames her for getting them into this mess only to break down crying and admitting that he actually envies Luz and understands what she lost. This ends up inspiring Luz to take her first steps in order to hug King, which leads to his vow to look after her.
  • Multi-Part Episode: The first of the series, it covers the first half of "The Intruder".
  • Name and Name: King and Lil' Luz's Day Out.
  • Noodle Incident: In a flashback, Eda brings up one of King's when he claims Luz doesn't need to walk.
King: I don't see the big deal about her walking. Isn't crawling around enough?
Eda: Look who's talking, Mr. "Crawled-inside-the-vents-and-somehow-got-stuck-inside-Hooty's-throat-for-4-days".
  • Out of Focus: This is the first chapter of the series where Amity doesn't appear after she debuted, but she is mentioned by Luz who says their first turoring session has been canceled due to the Boiling rain.
  • Point of Divergence: Luz and King have been aware of Eda's curse for years, a stark contrast to when King first learns about it a week after Luz came to the Boiling Isles.
  • Poisoned Chalice Switcheroo: Meant to be Played for Laughs. Two students swap out Eda's elixer with a potion from the potions classroom. This causes Eda to transform into the Owl Beast, making it Played for Drama.
  • Tempting Fate: Once he finds Lil' Luz outside, King begins to say nothing bad happened in the least. Cue the flying pig that takes the human baby away to its nest.
  • Whole Episode Flashback: The chapter is comprised of flashbacks to when King was still struggling to get used to a baby in the house.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: Based on the title, Baby's Day Out comes to mind, as an older character watches an infant character only for the infant to leave the house and get in danger.
