Tropes associated with this episode:

  • Daddy Had a Good Reason for Abandoning You: And Annie's mother Marge did: she was suffering the same scarlet fever that took her daughter's sight and knew she couldn't raise her, and that was why she left Annie at the blind school's door.
  • Deaf Composer: Annie Crane is almost completely blind but started to paint at an early age thanks to her memories of before she lost her sight and knowing where each color is placed.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Annie often has doubts about people's compliments of her painting, fearing that they just don't want to hurt a blind person's feelings. She's initially hesitant when the art collector who got interested in her art expresses his intention to announce her exposition as the work of a blind artist for the same reason, but he convinces her that they should use that fact to attract people so they could see her work in its own right.
    • Ironically, her mother Marge has the same attitude when her husband (whom she married at some point after leaving Annie) suggests that she tell her daughter about her illness so that she'd understand why she had to leave her, but Marge doesn't want her to come and see her out of pity.
  • Happily Adopted: Helen and Sorrell Crane are clearly loving parents to Annie and supportive of her painting talent. When Annie's biological mother tries to contact her through her new husband, they are initially reluctant but when Annie is negatively affected by that and her abandonment issues, they decide to support Caroline's idea to arrange a meeting between Annie and Marge, prioritizing their daughter's wellbeing.
  • No Antagonist: The major source of conflict is Annie's resentment towards her biological mother, due to believing she abandoned her because she didn't want a blind daughter. Both she and her mother Marge are treated sympathetically, as Marge reveals she couldn't raise her due to getting blind herself.
  • My Beloved Smother: Percival starts making efforts to avert this with Nellie by stopping Mrs. Oleson from continuing to pamper her daughter.
  • No Infantile Amnesia: Anne was abandoned at the age of 2, by which time she was starting to lose her sight. Despite this, she's able to paint images based on memories from when she could still see and even remember her mother's last words before she abandoned her.
  • Wham Line: The episode hides the fact that Marge is also blind by carefully portraying her vague, unfocused stare and difficulty to walk as if it's induced by another condition. Then she walks towards Annie with apparently little difficulty, reaches her hands to her head and asks:
Marge: What color is your hair now?
