Tropes

  • Accident, Not Murder: Coleman claims killing Aretha was this.
Coleman Green: I did the right thing. I stepped up. I got married. I always treated Cora like she was my own.
Carisi: You didn't do the right thing by Aretha though. You raped and killed that 13-year-old girl.
Coleman Green: No! It was an accident.
  • Child by Rape: Coleman impregnated Aretha, but murdered her before she could give birth.
  • Dirty Cop: Detective Szabo.
  • Disowned Parent: Cora rightfully disowns Coleman for molesting and murdering Aretha.
  • Get Out!: Benson to Szabo after a heated discussion in the former's office.
  • Hypocrite: Benson is disgusted by Szabo's disregard for procedure. Considering all the crap that Benson has gotten away with (including but not limited to outright Police Brutality), she is no position to judge.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Detective Nadia Szabo identifies Libby by using the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) to get access to Libby's DNA from her rape kit. Afterwards, D.A. Drakos (covering up her part and Szabo's) announces that all cases that misused the OCME database are going to be overturned.
  • Parental Incest: Coleman denies this when confronted with his crimes on the basis that since he isn't Cora's biological father, Aretha was not his granddaughter and therefore his molestation was not a sin against God.
  • Scary Black Man: Coleman Green.
  • Spanner in the Works: 9/11 was this for Aretha's case, it led to her body not being found for another 21 years.
  • Turn of the Millennium: The episode opens with a grid search for Aretha Green in the year 2001. Unfortunately, the day of the search in that same year was September 11th.
