Season One, Episode Two: Art

Written by Elizabeth Cosin
Directed by David Platt
Airdate: October 7, 2001

After a museum curator and an art authenticator are found murdered in a studio, Goren and Eames find themselves drawn into a conspiracy involving forged masterpieces and tax write-offs, and the masterminds behind it all who will do anything to keep up the charade.

  • Bilingual Bonus: This is the episode that introduces Goren's ability to speak German, which he uses to communicate with the art dealer they're investigating throughout the episode. Most of their conversation is subtitled, but their conversation when Goren and Eames finally arrest him isn't.
Goren: Sie haben ihre Partnerin unterschaetzt. Weil sie nun Moerderin ist kriegen ihre Gemaelde einen riesigen Preis. Translation
  • Genius Bonus: When arguing with Goren over the forgeries, Langer gestures at the Guggenheim museum behind them and retorts "you filled this building with motorcycles and called it art." The exhibition he references is in fact a real exhibition that took place at the Guggenheim; "The Art of the Motorcycle," which was held from June to September in 1998.
  • Never Suicide: The double-homicide investigated at the start is at first thought to have been a murder-suicide, as the female curator's body is discovered strung up and hung, like she killed herself after shooting the other man in there with her. Goren quickly disproves this, as she couldn't have even stood on the chair she supposedly kicked out from under her, and the gunshot residue on her hand doesn't match up with her being the one to commit the shooting. It later turns out that Sylvia Moon, the creator of the forged art, killed the curator herself in a mimicry of another murder she'd committed many years before: that of her college roommate, who she'd hung from the tile ceiling in their dorm to steal her work and pass it off as her own.
