Valmont uses an amnesia potion to erase Tohru's memories and get him to work under him again.
This episode provides examples of:
- Cardboard Prison: Despite Valmont being arrested in his last appearance, he is a free man in this episode.
- Criminal Amnesiac: Tohru, with the interesting twist that Tohru really was a criminal working for Valmont back in season 1. Valmont even uses Tohru's old criminal records from that time to convince him he's still his loyal henchman.
- Dirty Coward: Valmont ended up ditching Tohru as soon as the giant statues come to life to attack them. This, as well as Jackie being the one to come to his rescue, is what convinces Tohru who his true allies are.Valmont: Many thanks for your help Chan. A shame Tohru must render you senseless so that we may get on with our crime unhindered. Uh, Tohru, if you please.
Tohru: No.
Valmont: What do you mean “no”?!
Tohru: You were not so loyal to your “loyal henchman”.
Valmont: Well— I… I was simply hoping to duck away and find a large mallet with which to assist. - Good Feels Good: Even though he's still amnesiac, Tohru notices that Jackie, his supposed enemy, was of more help to him fighting the statues than his master.Tohru: Something inside me tells me Jackie is my friend.
- Hoist by His Own Petard: Valmont's own memory erasing potion is eventually used against him.
- Identity Amnesia: Valmont’s amnesia potion allows him to erase the victim’s memory, and they’ll think they are the first thing they are told. Valmont uses the potion to make Tohru think he’s still working for the Dark Hand. When Uncle is accidentally sprayed with the potion, he thinks he’s a goat because Valmont called him an “old goat”. When Valmont is sprayed by his own potion, Jade convinces him he’s a ballet dancer.
- Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Jade ended up unwittingly let Valmont and Tohru get pass the boiling lake by solving their riddle.Valmont: I was about to say that [autobiography]. Toodle-oo!Jade: Oopsie.
- Oh, Crap!: Babur gets this expression when he just told Valmont that he has to get across a lake of riddles to get to the temple.
- Riddle Me This: What the lake does to everyone that wishes to cross it.
- Rule of Three: Valmont says Tohru made it to the FBI's most wanted three years running.
- Shout-Out: Valmont is at one point called "Friar Liar" by Jade as a possible reference to Friar Tuck.
- Takes One to Kill One: Jackie and Tohru are able to defeat the Stone Sentinels by tricking them into hitting each, pushing and throwing one Sentinel at another, and throwing a Sentinel’s head at another.
