Recap / iCarly (2021) S1E6 "i'M Cursed"

Go To

Carly makes plans to spend her birthday alone in an attempt to stave off her dreaded birthday curse, but Spencer has different plans. Freddie tries to recapture his youth. Harper's idol leaves her awestruck.

Tropes:

  • Accidental Misnaming: Alexavier calls Harper "Merffin", as this was the sound that came out of her mouth when she introduced herself due to being starstruck. Even though Alexavier sees Harper's name on her name tag, he believes she's rejecting her "government name" and Harper never corrects him.
  • Birthday Episode: This episode focuses on Carly's 27th birthday.
  • Birthday Hater: Carly hates celebrating her birthday, believing it to be cursed due to all the bad things that have happened to her in the past. Examples include the incident with the goat on her 15th birthday, her room catching fire on her 16th birthday, chipping her tooth on a banana on her 19th birthday, and getting mugged for her Tamagotchi named Kuchipatchi on her 24th birthday. Freddie was served both of his divorce papers on July 24th, which is Carly's birthday. And when thrown a surprise party on her 27th birthday, Albert dies and Freddie injures his neck.
  • Black Comedy: Albert aka. "The Great Zagnut", the fake fortune teller that Spencer hired to help Carly get over her curse, dies of an aneurysm. Hilarity Ensues as Spencer tries to get his corpse out of the apartment without Carly finding out what happened. Spencer does get him out, but while Spencer is talking to Carly, Alexavier casually asks Spencer if he can have Albert's hat since he's dead.
  • The Bus Came Back:
    • Principal Franklin makes an appearance to deliver the letters that Carly and Freddie wrote to their future selves and even comes to Carly's surprise party.
    • Duke Lubberman, the roughneck, dim, but kind-hearted wrestler makes his return after having last appeared in "iHatch Chicks".
  • Call-Back: Albert the fortune teller dies of an aneurysm at Carly's party, just like what happened to Cramps the Clown at Nora Dershlit's party in "iPsycho" (Unlike Cramps, Albert's death is shown onscreen) Spencer is even told that aneurysm is the number one cause of death among party performers.
  • Continuity Nod: Carly's room burning up on her sixteenth birthday, as seen in "iGot a Hot Room", is mentioned, as is the mysterious "goat" incident from her prior birthday.
  • The Dreaded: Carly has started to fear her birthday as the years passed, compared to when she was excited in "iGot a Hot Room", possibly because she knows something bad always happens that day.
  • Hollywood Mid-Life Crisis: Freddie has a quarter-life crisis after reading his letter and realizing that he never partied in his twenties. He starts dressing like a teenage skateboarder, gets plastered at Carly's party, pukes on Alexavier and finally breaks his neck trying to crowdsurf.
  • No Ending: The show ends with Millicent recording a video message for her future self and a shot of Freddie with a neck brace on. We don't see Carly's reaction to Albert's death, nor Freddie gaining any appreciation for his current life.
  • Of Corpse He's Alive: After Zagnat dies, Spencer puts sunglasses on him and pretends he's "in a trance" so Carly won't be upset.
  • Shout-Out:
    • When Spencer tells Freddie where to find Millicent's hidden stash of fun things that she hides from Marissa Benson, Millicent tells Spencer "You just made the list!", which is one of Chris Jericho's catchphrases.
    • Spencer putting sunglasses on the deceased Zagnat is a reference to Weekend at Bernie's.
  • Surprise Party: Spencer throws one for Carly. She is not happy.
  • The Unreveal: The goat is mentioned once more, but we still don't find out what it did to Carly.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: Freddie gets drunk and vomits on Alexavier the photographer, with the vomit visible onscreen.
