Recap / Hudson And Rex S 4 E 5 Rex To Riches

Go To

When stock market guru Holland Sharma's fortune is stolen, Charlie and Rex set out on the trail of a very surprising thief. Meanwhile, the team works with Adele Tennant, the new Deputy Chief, to help solve the case, despite her questioning their methods of operation.

Tropes:

  • Anti-Villain: David Aziz. When he lost over twenty-eight grand following Holland's stock tips, it led to him discovering her to have been scamming people using pump and dump schemes, deciding to get revenge for himself and everyone else she conned by stealing the money back with the help of Regina. After the case is solved, Charlie mentions that he will mention Aziz’s help in exposing Holland's crimes to the judge, to which Aziz thanks him for while apologizing to Regina for having involved her in everything.
  • Arch-Enemy: Name-dropped by Sarah after finding out a dog is responsible for stealing Holland’s money, calling them Rex's very own arch-enemy or the "anti-Rex".
  • Con Artist: What Holland actually is, with her having made her millions by scamming her clients out of their money using pump and dump schemes. She had been getting away with it for years until David Aziz found out about it and decided to take action by stealing from her and giving portions of the money back to all of her victims.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Almost literally the case with Regina, with her helping Charlie, Rex, and Sarah to apprehend Aziz at Holland's place before he has a chance to make off with her laptop.
  • Evil All Along: Holland is initially presented as being a stock market guru who obtained her vast wealth through her own investment tips, until she turns out to actually be a con artist who made her money by scamming her clients with pump and dump schemes her entire career. The only reason Aziz did what he did was because he was one of her victims and was trying to stop her. Tennant is appalled when Donovan tells her all about it.
  • Foreshadowing: The investigation leads to finding out that not all of Holland's money-making tips work, with dozens of people having lost thousands because of it. That's because Holland had been scamming them using pump and dumps, until one of her victims got wise to her manipulations and decided to strike back against her.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: Joining the investigation is Deputy Chief Adele Tennant, who also happens to be a long-time friend of Holland.
  • Just Like Robin Hood: Hours after the theft occurs, portions of the stolen money start to appear in people's mailboxes all over the city, ranging from thousands to tens of thousands. Said people also happen to be those who had apparently lost money on Holland's get-rich tips. The team even comment on the thief being like a modern-day Robin Hood after looking into it.
  • Self-Made Woman: Holland's origin story is that she was near-penniless and struggling to make ends meet before making millions through stock trading, with her now being a stock market guru presenting the methods she used to her followers via an online community to help them become rich too. However, when the team discovers that there were dozens of people who instead lost money following her tips, Donovan starts to suspect that some of the details of Holland’s story are untrue or, at the very least, greatly exaggerated. Tennant just brushes him off as being ridiculous while Holland claims that her clients’ losing money is because of them not following her instructions. His suspicions are proven correct. The real way Holland made her millions was through scamming her clients using pump and dump schemes.
  • Smart Animal, Average Human: Regina, the dog that stole Holland’s money, is apparently even more of one than Rex, being able to do things he can't like going up ladders without any problems. Her past as a former seeing-eye dog probably helps.
  • Spanner in the Works: Had Aziz not taken action after losing his money, Holland would've likely kept on scamming people with nobody being the wiser.
  • Sticky Fingers: Caitlin Price, one of Holland's assistants, is revealed to secretly steal a small fraction of her boss’s merchandise to sell online, apparently because she still receives minimum wage after working for her for three years.
  • Thieving Pet: The evidence reveals Holland's money to have been stolen by a dog who snuck in through the building's ventilation system. Said dog, named Regina, is a former seeing-eye dog now owned by David Aziz, a former follower of Holland who lost money following her tips.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Donovan expresses this when he has to tell Tennant that Holland's money was stolen by a dog.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Tennant's initial reaction to Donovan informing her that a dog is responsible for stealing Holland's money. She takes it better once the details of the situation are further explained.
