Recap / Hudson And Rex S 1 E 5 The Pet Sitter

Go To

Charlie and Rex investigate the death of a pet sitter named Brooklyn Weber as well as the involvement of the victim's sister Naomi Turner and her husband Scott.

Tropes:

  • Accidental Murder: Naomi had approached Brooklyn at the park under the belief that the latter was having an affair with Scott, unaware of their blackmailing operation and demanding the truth from her. This eventually led to a fight where the dog Brooklyn was walking bit Naomi, sending her into a freak out and pushed Brooklyn against a tree branch, piercing her heart and killing her.
  • The Alcoholic: Scott is almost never seen without a bottle of booze in his pockets, saying that it helps to keep the boredom away. Charlie retorts by asking if it also helped keep the boredom away at Scott's old job too, implying that it was what got him fired. He also keeps several other bottles hidden around the house in addition to his blackmail money, much to Naomi's dismay.
  • The Atoner: While Brooklyn did help Scott to blackmail her own clients, she expressed regret towards doing it to Tracy, having offered to pay back a fraction of the money and work off the rest of it while telling her that someone else put her up to it. Fortunately, Tracy was willing to forgive her since Brooklyn always does a good job with taking care of her cat Heidi.
  • Blackmail:
    • Tracy reveals that Brooklyn had been blackmailing her, possessing evidence that she had secretly been using Adderall to help her lose weight (Tracy claims that despite all her diets and exercises, it's still not enough to lose weight and admits that sometimes she needs some extra help). Brooklyn gave her a choice: either pay her ten grand in cash, or be exposed as a fraud in front of all of her fans. However, Brooklyn eventually contacted Tracy saying that she was sorry and that she would give back some of the money and work the rest of it off, saying that someone else put her up to the blackmailing.
    • For the past six months, Scott had roped Brooklyn into helping him commit cash fraud and blackmail several people, including some of Brooklyn’s own clients so he could keep the illusion that he was still working in ad sales. Brooklyn reluctantly did so until her conscience made her decide enough was enough and wanted out, swallowing the SD card and destroying most of the blackmail material on it so Scott wouldn't be able to keep doing it.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Gus (the dog Brooklyn was taking care of in the beginning of the episode before her death). The bite mark he left on Naomi's leg ends up being used to figure out that she was with Brooklyn at the park when she died and that she's the one who killed her.
  • Covert Pervert: Paul is revealed to have a secret foot fetish, having set up several cameras at ground level all over his house, including private spaces like the bathroom and tells his guests to leave their shoes and socks off. He claims the cameras are so he can watch his dog Princess, but Charlie doesn’t buy it and has him arrested for voyeurism.
  • Eat the Evidence: Brooklyn's autopsy reveals that she had swallowed an SD card about twelve hours before her death, much to Jesse's disgust when Charlie tells him about it. The card contains information used to blackmail several people, including Brooklyn's own clients like Tracy Thomas for her Adderall usage and Paul Snell for his foot fetish. Brooklyn swallowed it to keep Scott from blackmailing any more people when she told him that she didn't want to do it anymore.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • The beginning of the episode has Brooklyn looking after a dog for one of her clients when she receives an unknown phone call, telling the person on the other end that "[They] aren't having this conversation." The "conversation" being about Scott's secret blackmailing operation that he had roped her into helping him with.
    • Tracy Thomas, a popular health specialist and one of Brooklyn's clients always pays her via direct deposit, except for the last time being in cash. Tracy had just assumed that Brooklyn was just trying to avoid paying taxes. The last payment was actually ten thousand dollars in blackmail money to keep Tracy's Adderall usage under wraps. Scott had taken a thousand of it for himself while Brooklyn gave the other nine thousand to Robbie.
    • Paul Snell (another of Brooklyn's clients) has an unusual rule for guests to not wear shoes and socks around his house. It’s because he has a secret foot fetish and has several ground level cameras set up to record people walking around in their bare feet.
  • In the Back: Brooklyn's cause of death was from being impaled on a tree branch that ended up piercing her heart through her back.
  • Lives in a Van: Robbie McCann, Brooklyn's boyfriend. He's living out of his car and bartends at an unlicensed booze can. He's also hiding nine thousand dollars in blackmail money in his car given to him from Brooklyn that she got from Tracy to get back on his feet, but never spent any of it in case she needed it back. After the case is solved, Robbie gets the cash back from Charlie who tells him that Tracy said it could be donated. Charlie is also nice enough to help Robbie out with his car when it breaks down.
  • Mistaken for Cheating: Naomi was unaware of Scott and Brooklyn's blackmailing operation and had assumed that the two of them were having an affair. She went to confront Brooklyn about it at the park, which led to the fight that resulted in Brooklyn's death.
  • Unconfessed Unemployment: Scott used to be in ad sales before he lost his job and started working at the bottle recycling plant for minimum wage. It's apparently been going on for months with him not wanting Naomi to find out, especially since she's now in the middle of grieving over Brooklyn's death. He keeps up the appearance that he's still working at his old job by always being dressed in business attire. He also keeps up the illusion of payment by blackmailing people for money with reluctant help from Brooklyn. His dress shoes give him away when they're caught on a security camera hidden in Paul Snell’s bathroom while he's conversing with Brooklyn about their operation.
