Ted struggles with writing a best man's speech for Marshall and Lily's wedding, Lily finds out that she's gotten too skinny to fit in her wedding dress, and Barney fulfills his dream of appearing on The Price Is Right to meet Bob Barker, who he believes to be his father.
This episode provides examples of:
- Bowdlerise: In-universe. Because some of Marshall's relatives are socially conservative, Ted can't use in his toast some rated TV-14 stuff like Marshall & Lily drinking alcohol or getting physically romantic at midlevel. Ted tried a toast where the couple drink milkshakes and just hold hands but was so disgusted with it that he was considering the popular "Footprints" poem. Fortunately, the story of Lily & Marshall staying at a hotel and just ordering room service was not only cute but also appropriate for all the wedding guests.
- Drill Sergeant Nasty: In an attempt to make Lily gain weight, Robin makes her stuff her face in food by screaming at her while Lily tries to eat more chocolate while crying.
- First-World Problems: A rather backwards variant. Lily's seamstress hangs up on her after she complains that her dress doesn't fit because she's been effortlessly losing weight.
- Foreshadowing:
- At one point, Ted and Robin enter the apartment, covered in pasta sauce. Lily starts to ask what happened, but then drops the matter entirely. For some reason, the blue French horn is also missing from Robin's apartment.
- Marshall is seen wearing a fedora while Ted gives his best man speech.
- Game Show Appearance: Barney goes on The Price is Right to meet Bob Barker, whom he's been told is his father.
- Girl on Girl Is Hot: Referenced sarcastically by Barney. After learning that Marshall made a video of himself singing "night night" to Lily for her to keep while they spend the last few weeks before their wedding sleeping apart, Barney asks them to kiss because he loves it when two girls make out.
- Intentional Weight Gain: When the stress of wedding planning caused Lily to lose weight until she couldn't fit into her wedding dress, she tried to gain it back quickly by binging on junk food.Lily: Best wedding diet ever!
- Line-of-Sight Name: A variation. In a flashback, young Barney asks his mother who his father was. Mrs. Stinson sees Bob Barker on TV and says "Him."
- Pet the Dog: Barney gives away all of his prizes to Marshall and Lily as wedding gifts.
- Toplessness from the Back: When Lily tries on her wedding dress, the top slips off, which is shown from behind.
- "Well Done, Son" Guy: Barney plans out a whole scenario for telling Bob Barker he's his son. When he gets him to say he's proud of him, Barney almost squeals with joy.
- Who's Your Daddy?: When Barney was a kid, his mom told him Bob Barker was his father. He still believes it as an adult, though it's implied that he actually knows his father was just a normal guy who walked out on him but can't accept it.
