Bones of Contention

Directed By: Brad Anderson
Story By: Eric Overmyer
Teleplay By: James Yoshimura

Lewis and Munch investigate when female skeletal remains are dug up on a construction site, and discover the woman in question was involved in a bank robbery from the 1980's. After the beating she took, Sheppard returns to Homicide, but to her dismay, Giardello confines her to desk duty. Giardello also tells Ballard and Falsone they can't see each other anymore if they want to stay on the same shift at Homicide, so they decide to see each other in secret instead.

This episode contains examples of:

  • As Himself: Richard Latham, former head of the Baltimore Criminal Investigation Division, appears briefly coming out of the building as Lewis and Munch greet him.
  • Call-Back: Munch grouses this isn't the first time he's dealt with a skeleton's remains.
  • Forbidden Fruit: Lampshaded at the end of the episode, when Ballard and Falsone agree the fact their relationship is now officially forbidden makes it even sexier.
  • Women Are Delicate: Discussed - when Sheppard and Stivers are in the bathroom together, Sheppard says she thinks every man in the department thinks she went for her gun too quickly instead of trying to physically intimidate the witness she was trying to take in, and that's why she got beaten. Stivers tries to assure Sheppard she would have done the same thing, but Sheppard isn't buying it.
