While out to arrest a murder suspect, Bolander, Felton and Howard are all shot, and all of them require extensive surgery. Pembleton, along with Bolander's old partner Mitch Drummond (Tony Lo Bianco) and Theresa Walker (Gloria Reuben), a sex crimes detective, try to find the shooter.

This episode contains examples of:

  • As You Know: The opening scene has Bolander, Felton, Howard and Munch discussing Glenn Holton, the man they're about to arrest, giving details to each other that they should have already known.
  • Continuity Nod: The episode is set the day after the ending of the previous episode, as Bolander is complaining of a hangover after his excessive drinking at the opening of Munch's, Lewis's and Bayliss's bar, and the other three are teasing him about the debauchery he allegedly got up to.
  • Failed a Spot Check: The secretary who typed up the wrong address for the warrant for Glenn Holton - she transposed the numbers so that it was "201" when she meant to type "210". When she realizes what she did, she's aghast.
  • Foreshadowing: Room 201 will become important in a later episode.
  • Friend to All Children: Once again, Giardello - when Beth comes with her kids to see Felton at the hospital and asks Giardello to look after them, the kids both say they don't need anyone looking after them, at which point Giardello smiles, bends down, and says, "Maybe you can look after me", which they both agree to. The next time we see them, he's reading them a story.
  • Heroic BSoD:
    • Munch has one at the hospital when he describes the shooting to Giardello, even crying about the fact he wasn't able to shoot back.
    • Giardello has one with Lewis after talking with Howard's father about what happened. He mentions having to go to the hospital with his daughter, how she asked him, "Daddy, make it stop hurting," and there was nothing he could do.
  • It's Personal: This is how Drummond convinces Giardello to let him be part of the investigation.
  • Multi-Part Episode: The first of three parts.
  • Orphaned Punchline: In what would later become a Running Gag, right before he finds out about Bolander, Felton and Howard getting shot, Lewis is telling a joke to the other detectives in the unit and says the line, "So the bear said, 'You didn't come here to hunt, did you'?".
  • Pet the Dog: When Barnfather comes down to the Homicide Unit after the shooting, Russert assumes he's there to blame Giardello, but he assures Russert he's there to help out any way he can.
