Recap / Hey Arnold S 2 E 34 Mudbowl Gerald Moves Out

Go To

The eighth episode of the second season of Hey Arnold!.

Mudbowl

Wolfgang and his gang of fifth-graders challenge Arnold and his gang of fourth-graders to a game of football

Gerald Moves Out

When Gerald becomes tired of dealing with his family's antics, he moves into the Boarding House so he can do whatever he wants, but he finds out he doesn't have as much freedom as the thought he would have.

"Mudbowl" provides examples of:

  • Loophole Abuse: The fourth graders attempt to gain an advantage in their football game against the fifth graders by having Torvald (who is in fact a fourth grader, but has been held back three times) play for them. It works until he trips in a pothole and hurts his ankle, making him unable to play.
  • Miracle Rally: Arnold and friends end up winning their ball game against the fifth graders in "Mudbowl" when Arnold takes Helga's place as quarterback.
  • One of the Boys: Despite her wealthy uprbringing and snobby, self-righteous attitude, Rhonda is mostly seen hanging out with the boys. She has been known to play contact football along with the other children, even to the point of destroying her beloved outfits in this episode.
  • Rage Quit: Gerald and the rest of the team threaten to do this when Helga first refuse to let Arnold be quarterback since her plans isn’t working at all.
  • Summon Bigger Fish: The fourth graders have to play football against Wolfgang and the other fifth graders. They decide to ask Torvald, who is older and much bigger than the fifth graders (including Wolfgang!). He effortlessly plows through the fifth graders and seems pretty unstoppable... until he trips and sprains his ankle.

"Gerald Moves Out" provides examples of:

  • Group Hug: The episode ends with this, to drive home that despite moving out earlier, Gerald's family unconditionally love him and welcome his return home.
  • Growing Up Sucks: Played with. In Gerald's case, it's a variation where "Living on your own stinks". He has to earn his own keep to pay rent, struggles to keep his housing clean, and has to keep his own clothing clean. Needless to say, he learns the hard way that providing for one's self isn't the ideal lifestyle he dreamt it would be.
  • Imagine Spot: Gerald imagines that if only he had a place of his own, it would be a paradisiacal penthouse where he'd have so much elbow room, a high tech living room, and have pizza all to himself.
