Recap / Hercules The Animated Series S 1 E 8 Hercules And The Worlds First Doctor

Go To

At Career Day, Hercules becomes intrigued by Hippocrates, a man who has made a career out of curing the sick. Hippocrates irritates both Phil (who becomes jealous of Hercules' interest) and Hades (who hates how much the new doctor has depleted his subjects).

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • The Illegible: Downplayed; consistent with the stereotype, Hippocrates confuses Herc with part of his prescription. However, only a single ingredient is illegible, and it's easily fixed.
  • It Will Never Catch On: At the job fair, no one except Hercules is interested in Hippocrates' ridiculous notion of healing the sick.
  • Made Myself Sad: After Hippocrates loses a patient for the first time, Icarus tries to pep talk him and Hercules. However, he ends up depressing himself.
  • Pity the Kidnapper: Hades infects Hippocrates with the plague to kill him...and regrets it when Hippocrates continues his work in the underworld, causing the dead to come back to life. When Hercules demands that Hades release Hippocrates, he's all too happy to agree.
  • Rescued from the Underworld: Hercules goes to the underworld to demand that Hades let Hippocrates go.
  • Super Doc: Hippocrates, the Greek World's First Doctor. He's so skilled that he managed to nullify any new entries into the Underworld and almost put it out of business while he was alive, and when he ended up in the Underworld he started curing dead people, bringing them back to life and depleting the Underworld population.
  • Take That!: After realizing that not even Death can stop Hippocrates from healing the sick, Hades decides to slow him down as much as possible by introducing the former to golf, not taking housecalls, double billing and HMOs.
