Tropes

  • Continuity Nod: Lorelai mentions that she went to business school in season two.
  • Call-Back:
    • Mitchum offers Rory a job at any newspaper agency in the world. Rory points out that Mitchum wasn't so pro her career at the end of season five.
    • Rory marvels at how Mitchum somehow convinced her to outwardly agree with him even though she disagrees. Logan says she's been huntzbergered, mirroring how Lorelai told Luke he'd been gilmored after her parents did the same to him in season five.
  • Hypocrite: Mitchum suddenly thinks Rory is a brilliant journalist now that he wants her help manipulating Logan.
  • Liquid Courage: Lorelai's drink works really fast.
  • Metaphorgotten:
    • Richard and Emily's chef Stephan has worked at so many four-star restaurants that he could have his own constellation.
    • Averted with Emily's marriage=canoe/singlehood=kayak metaphor.
  • Mrs Degree: Emily studied history at Smiths, but she never intended to be a historian.
  • Out-of-Context Eavesdropping: Kirk overhears Miss Patty and Babette talk about the Chris/Lorelai/Luke Love Triangle using codenames, and he finds the idea of a hen mating with an ostrich reprehensible. How is she gonna lay those eggs?
  • Real Men Wear Pink: TJ declares that he always wanted to be a stay-at-home husband raising the kids.
  • Self-Deprecation: Paris and Doyle started yoga to B.S. their way through med school interviews, but they found themselves enjoying it, so now the cosmic joke is on them.
  • Shout-Out
    • Richard comments that knowing how it ends never stopped anyone from seeing Hamlet.
    • Lorelai thinks it's more like Richard III, because of all the old men.
    • Rory loved Philip Meyer's The Vanishing Newspaper.
  • Spy Speak: Babette and Miss Patty refer to Lorelai as "the hen" and Chris as "the beagle". Luke is "the rooster", making their preferred ship pretty clear. Kirk misunderstands. It is unclear exactly who "the ostrich" is.
  • Technologically Blind Elders: Emily learns how to navigate an online tax form from Lorelai. She finds the effects of right-click pretty fascinating.
  • Themed Party: Rory wants to throw Logan a birthday party and, learning that he never had a real birthday party growing up, decides to throw him all the birthday parties, based on her own.
    • The theme of her 6th: outer space.
    • 7th: fiesta with piñata.
    • 8th: teddy bear tea party. This is the one the police came to.
    • 12th: ice skating in Central Park wearing a Russian ushanka.
  • Title Drop: Lorelai says the episode title in response to her mother's canoe metahor.
  • Verbal Backspace: Emily asserts that having dinner with one's family does not require great effort. Lorelai begins to contadict her, but stops herself.
