* ObliviouslySuperpowered: Daenerys Targaryen is completely oblivious to her supernatural ability to withstand extreme heat. After getting felt up by her brother Viserys, she climbs into a steaming hot bath without noticing the temperature, apparently too intent on ScrubbingOffTheTrauma to pay attention to the alarmed reaction of a nearby servant.

There's a short scene at King's Landing, the capital of Westeros, where a blonde man and a blonde woman -- Ser Jaime Lannister of the Kingsguard and his twin sister, Queen Cersei Lannister -- have a cryptic conversation about keeping secrets whilst a funeral goes on. Up at Winterfell, Catelyn brings a letter to Ned explaining what the funeral was about: it was for Lord Jon Arryn of the Eyrie, Hand of the King these past seventeen years until his untimely death by disease. The letter also claims that Robert Baratheon, the First of his Name, King of the Andals and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms and Protector of the Realm, is coming north to Winterfell to visit his best friend Ned, who he has not seen in years. Three guesses why.

* SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome: Will flees to the North to warn the people about the terrifying evil that's coming for them. In any other fantasy series, this would make him the hero, or at least one of the main characters. But in this one, not only do the people not for a second believe one random guy's proofless word about an ancient evil he swears is coming, but he's also deserting from his duty -- and in Westeros, like most medieval societies, that's a crime punishable by death. Poor Will gets executed.

Poor Will gets executed. It's something of a minor EstablishingSeriesMoment for the show as a whole; this show is going to look at how a fantasy kingdom would operate as if it were realistic to the medieval societies such kingdoms are typically based on.

Added DiffLines:

* DecoyProtagonist: Will from the pre-credits teaser would likely, in any other fantasy story, be the hapless lowborn who finds himself on an epic journey to become the hero who will defeat the terrifying evil he encounters, in the process going through quite a lot of CharacterDevelopment and ending up married to the beautiful princess. But Westeros ain't that kind of fantasy kingdom. Poor Will ends up getting captured and getting his head chopped off for desertion of his duty by the actual protagonist.

* AgentScully: Ned dismisses the deserter's claims of the White Walkers returning to Bran as a madman's ravings. When Benjen points out that said deserter was a reliable ranger and his companions are still missing, Ned insists they were probably victims of a wildling ambush.

* DiesDifferentlyInAdaptation: Will is beheaded as a Night's Watch deserter by Ned here, whereas in the books, he is strangled to death by a reanimated Waymer Royce after the White Walkers kill him. Gared is the one beheaded for desertion by Ned in the books, whereas in the episode, he is killed by the White Walkers.

* ShamefulStrip: Daenerys gets two of these; first at the hands of her brother feeling her up under the pretext of making sure she's fit for marriage, then by her new husband on their wedding night. The first she endures with a weary resignation, while she's sobbing and desperately trying to cover herself during the second.
