Tropes

  • Competition Freak: Monica plays foosball against Chandler and Joey. She beats them easily and trash-talks them all the way through to the point where Chandler and Joey literally pick her up and carry her out the door of their apartment so they can enjoy the game in peace.
  • Defenestrate and Berate: Rachel does this with Paolo's belongings while confronting him over his making a pass at Phoebe. We even get a special Establishing Shot of the apartment building with his clothes falling to the sidewalk.
  • Destructo-Nookie: An indirect example. After the kitchen table collapses, Chandler suggests it's because it was damaged when Joey had sex with an ex-girlfriend on top of it.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Chandler and Joey buy furniture together and get to talking about Chandler's old roommate Kip and how he compares to Joey in a conversation that makes the two look like a married couple, with Kip as an old flame of Chandler's.
  • Innocently Insensitive:
    • Ross lies about the lasagna being vegetarian to help Monica get rid of them not realizing that depending how long a person has been vegetarian, eating meat can make one sick (although he may have meant it malevolently given his dislike of Susan, though probably not aware of the actual health risks).
    • He also asks when the two met Huey Lewis, not realizing that's their friend Tanya
  • Shout-Out: In the Cold Open the gang all sing the theme tune to The Odd Couple (1970) together. When they're done Ross tries to start again with the theme to I Dream of Jeannie before Chandler tells him to stop.
  • Wham Line:
Ross: See, because not-not all guys out there are gonna be a Paolo.
Rachel: Yeah, I know. I know. And I'm sure your little boy's not gonna grow up to be one.
  • Will Not Tell a Lie: Phoebe makes a point of telling Rachel that she believes this to make it clear to Rachel that she's telling the truth about Paolo hitting on her.
