Recap / Fresh Off The Boat S 3 E 4 Citizen Jessica

Go To

A politically-minded Louis makes Cattleman's Ranch an official polling place for the 1996 Elections. While Jessica wants to promote Conservative values after learning her recent house sale has bumped up the family's tax bracket, Evan ridicules Emery for supporting Bob Dole over Bill Clinton. Meanwhile, Eddie is in denial over the death of Tupac Shakur.

  • Conspiracy Theorist: Eddie's become one by the end of the episode, noticing that the shoes Tupac was wearing in his final music video appearance weren't publicly revealed until after his death, and theorizing that he faked his own death in order to promote album sales.
  • Failure Is the Only Option: Fitting with historical accuracy, Emery's campaigning for Bob Dole ends in failure. However, thanks to his efforts, Cattleman's Ranch does get on the news as the only polling place in their district where Bob Dole gained a majority of the votes.
  • Irony:
    • After spending most of the episode with a Conservative mindset, worried about taxes and concerned that illegal immigrants are taking advantage of the same systems she's worked hard to be accepted by, it turns out that Jessica has just been renewing her Resident Alien/Green Card status over the years instead of applying for full citizenship, and is thus an illegal immigrant herself.
    • Louis was so hyped about the American duty to vote, and focused on maintaining order at the polls, that he forgot to actually cast his own vote.
  • Never My Fault: Jessica spends most of the episode antagonizing Hector Martinez, one of Louis' employees, for being a Mexican raised by illegal immigrants. However, she changes her mind after he helps deal with her green card problem, and tries to shift some of the blame onto Louis, who was fully supportive of Hector the entire time.
  • Shout-Out: Hector Martinez (played by Noel Gugliemi) reveals in this episode that he's into street racing and owns a modified Honda Civic. In The Fast and the Furious (2001), Noel played a different character named Hector that used a modified Honda Civic for street racing.
