Release Date: November 4, 1995

The Chip part I: The story of Freakazoid’s origins.

Tropes Found in this Episode:

  • Chasing a Butterfly: Dexter’s cat Mr. Chubbikins does this and winds up walking across his keyboard, entering the exact sequence of keys needed to activate the Pinnacle Chip’s flaw.
  • Christmas Episode: This episode technically is one, as its events take place on Christmas Day.
  • Cool and Unusual Punishment: Guitierrez threatens that if Dexter and Roddy don’t give him the code to activate the Pinnacle Chip flaw, he’ll force Dexter’s family, whom he had also captured, to watch a tape of “The Best of Marty Ingles”.
Roddy: What kind of sadistic creature are you?!
  • I Have Your Wife: Guitierrez captures the Douglas Family as a means to persuade Dexter into telling him how to activate the Pinnacle Chip’s flaw.
  • Involuntary Shapeshifting: After Dexter first becomes Freakazoid, he frequently shifts back and forth between his two personas. Roddy explains upon meeting him that this is due to his powers being unstable at the time.
  • Million to One Chance: When Roddy discovers the flaw in the Pinnacle Chip, he calculates the odds of it being activated at 450 million to one. Guess who was that one?
  • Origins Episode: We finally see just how Dexter got “zapped in cyberspace” and became Freakazoid.
  • Tempting Fate: Roddy had calculated the chances of the Pinnacle Chip’s flaw being activated at 450 million to 1, to which one of Apex Industries’ executives laughs and says, “450 million to one? What are we worried about?” Turns out Roddy had every right to be concerned, as the Chip’s flaw was activated by Dexter Douglas the very next day.
  • Title Drop: Roddy does this when explaining what the Pinnacle Chip’s flaw would do if activated.
Roddy: I wouldn’t have such happy slacks if I were you. Because if someone did manage to activate the flaw, a pox on ‘em! The Pinnacle Chip would overload, causing a concentrated beam of energy to zap the user. It would fill his or her brain with all the information on the internet! It would give ‘em superhuman strength, enabling them to do just about anything! But they’d be very silly, extremely perturbed, they’d be… a Freakazoid!
