Recap / Frasier S 07 E 06 Rivals

Go To

Niles suspects Frasier is hiding an attraction to the station's new beautiful but long-winded art critic, Poppy. This is complicated when Niles finds himself drawn to her instead.

Frasier returns home and finds a strange woman in a towel using the phone. It soon turns out that her name is Regan, she recently moved in next door, and Martin rescued her when she accidentally locked herself out.

Frasier decides to ask Regan out. But after an awkward exchange when she and Niles see each other, Frasier comes to believe that he and Regan had been romantically involved, when really she is just Niles's patient. Both Crane brothers try to woo their respective love interest away from their suspected rival.

Tropes:

  • Imaginary Love Triangle / Sibling Triangle: Two of them. Frasier believes he's competing with Niles for Regan, while Niles believes he's competing with Frasier for Poppy. It isn't until both women have left the party in a huff that the brothers discover they were never rivals at all.
  • Naked People Trapped Outside: Regan jumped out of the shower to answer the door and ended up locking herself out in a towel. Martin invited her in to their apartment to call the locksmith, and so she could meet Frasier.
  • One Dialogue, Two Conversations: At the end of the episode. Frasier and Niles each nobly stand aside for the other's sake. They realize they have each been chasing a different woman only after drinking a toast:
Frasier: You know, while we're at it, let's propose a toast to one pretty remarkable woman.
Niles: Well, she'd have to be to have won both of our hearts.
Frasier: Hear, hear. [They raise their glasses] Well, then...
Frasier/Niles: [At the same time] To Regan/Poppy!
Frasier: [They freeze as the comprehension sinks in] I think we're gonna need two more here.
  • Poor Communication Kills: If Frasier and Niles had been clearer about who they were interested in then the whole issue could have bene avoided.
  • Shout-Out: Regan confirms that she was named for the character from King Lear.
