Recap / Family Ties S 1 E 8 No Nukes Is Good Nukes

Go To

Steven and Elyse announce to their children that they will be taking part in an anti-nuclear demonstration rally, prompting heated discussion amongst the family members about the pros and cons of possessing a nuclear arsenal. The Keaton's grandparents arrive with supplies ready for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday and make their disapproval towards Steven and Elyse's involvement in the protest very clear. While flicking between channels, the Keaton children end up watching their parents being arrested on live TV.

Examples:

  • Bedsheet Ladder: Proposed by one of the protesters Elyse and Steven are locked up with in order to escape, but her suggestion is rapidly deconstructed:
Elyse: We don't have any sheets.
Steven: We don't have any windows.
Walter: Other than that, it was a great idea.
  • Give Me Back My Wallet: Walter, one of the arrested protesters, reveals that he was arrested for pickpocketing at the rally rather than for protesting. This prompts Steven to immediately move his wallet into his front shirt pocket.
  • Mutually Assured Destruction: Steven, Elyse and Alex discuss this in detail at the beginning of the episode, prompting Jennifer to give her opinion:
Jennifer: Why can't both sides just have no bombs?
    (long pause)
Alex: It's too late, we already paid for them.
  • Thanksgiving Episode
  • Waving Signs Around: Steve and Elyse even bring their old signs from previous demonstrations out of storage to use for this nuclear rally.
