Tropes

  • Artistic License – Traditional Christianity: Acosta claims that Prayer is just asking God for something, who is then obligated to give it to you. Most real life Christian clergy find this view of prayer very annoying and actively try to refute it. First, contrary to popular belief, prayer is actually any time you want to talk to God about anything. Second, even when you do ask for something, this episode is a perfect example of why God is not in the slightest obliged to actually give it to you. Although it could very well be that David is attempting to explain the concept of prayer in a way that might encourage him to use it as a coping mechanism, like he did earlier when explaining that by trying to fit in and go along with the way other people are acting, Eric is more likely to be able to get the job he wants as an adult as a comic-book artist. (Especially if you take into account the way he attempted to explain God's plan to Kristen in the second episode.)
  • Augmented Reality: The game in which Rose 390 appears. It makes the entire Bouchard residence look like a stock video game haunted house.
  • Big Creepy-Crawlies: Along with the army of regular-size spiders the game includes a giant spider with a human face and some kind of big green bug with a gaping maw.
  • Blatant Lies: The girls ask the creepy avatar Rose390 who she is. Her response: "Just a regular kid like you, playing the game."
  • Creepy Child: Eric, much to the worry of his parents.
  • Decapitation Presentation: Another shock effect of the game. A big scary dude hoists a bloody head in the Bouchard bathroom.
  • Man Bites Man: One of the incidents that cause the McCrystals to call the Church is Eric biting his sister Jeannie.
  • Offing the Offspring: As the mother Sarah all but confesses, this was their desperate response to Eric's attempted drowning of Olive.
  • Rewatch Bonus: The disheveled man's lower half and messy room that appear right after the opening message from the VR game make more sense after you've seen "Room 320". This is not the dapper villain Leland we're dealing with.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: Eric, but to call it troubling would be a massive understatement. He talks in perfect Creepy Monotone for the entirety of his screen time, bit his little sister because he was annoyed at the fact that she wouldn't stop laughing, attempted to poison his parents multiple times, and nearly succeeded in drowning his baby sister.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Eric is a child who would hurt a smaller child, i.e. his infant sister.
