Recap / Empath: The Luckiest Smurf - A Haunted Christmas

Go To

A Christmas Episode that is based on the 1980s Smurfs cartoon show episode "Haunted Smurfs", which in turn is based on the comic book story "The Hungry Smurfs". Smurfette recalls the time around her first Christmas with the Smurfs that the storehouse in the village was destroyed by a fire, and the Smurfs were forced to evacuate the village in order to find food and shelter elsewhere for the winter. In the process, they stumble upon an old castle in which there is supposedly a ghost protecting it from outsiders, but in reality is just an old man who lost his treasure to what he thinks is a real ghost and is just trying to get by on what little food he has left.

This story provides examples of:

  • Adaptation Expansion: The Christmas elements weren't part of either the cartoon show episode or the original comic book story.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Tapper helps the Smurfs deal with the loss of food with whatever stock he has left in the tavern.
  • Lights Off, Somebody Dies: Played with near the end, as in the Framing Story the lights go off during the Smurfs' Christmas dinner and Smurfette mysteriously disappears to an unknown fate.
  • Meat-O-Vision: What Nabby suffers from when he eats his stash of smurfnip during the famine in the Smurf Village.
  • Ode to Intoxication: The Smurfs sing a few of them: "Green Leaves" (about smoking smurfnip) and "Streams Of Sarsaparilla Ale".
  • Suddenly Sober: Papa Smurf gives Nabby a remedy that suddenly sobers him up from the effects of smurfnip.
  • Title Drop: By Empath near the end of the story.
  • Twisted Christmas: What the story shapes itself into from the situation presented in the first half, but ultimately averts when things turn out for the better for the Smurfs.
