Recap / The Ministry of Time S03 E12: "Against Time"
aka: El Ministerio Del Tiempo S 03 E 12 Contratiempos

Go To

Alonso charges into an office and fights off several men, beating them while barely breaking his stride, as he gets his way through a door, where someone is waiting for him: Bosco. Alonso demands to know where Elena is, and Bosco replies by showing him a video that shows Elena tied up to a chair full of explosives that will activate when Bosco presses the button he carries. The Ángel Exterminador leader makes him an offer: pass information on the Ministry's business, or Elena will die. Defeated, Alonso accepts.

It is 1976. In a room in Madrid, sixteen men meet with an important task in mind: decide who are to be the candidates for the new Prime Minister of Spain after Arias Navarro's resignation. After the voting takes place, a member of the staff checks on the provisional list of nine candidates, and as soon as he can finds a lonely place and pulls out a mobile phone: he is an agent of the Ministry, and Adolfo Suárez is not in the provisional list.

Pacino has his small problem with Marta, who now intends to help the Ministry put a stop to the Sons of Padilla and wants to know whether Pacino will ever forgive her for her betrayal, and Lola suffers her own small shock when her daughter Lucía offers her to return several of the paintings old!Lola stole in exchange of something: she wants to know who is her father. Both of them receive a call from Salvador.

The secretary immediately gives them his new mission: they must go to 1976 and ensure Adolfo Suárez is part of the list. Apart from the fact that the Spanish Transition will not take place without him (at least, not in the same way), there is a more personal reason: without Suárez, Salvador will not become Secretary of the Ministry of Time, and none of the others would have been recruited or rescued at important points. Lola reveals Lucía's offer, which comes from the fact that she is dying of ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) and wants to learn the truth. After a brief homage to Pablo Olivares (co-creator of the series, who died of ALS before the series premiered), Salvador consents to allow her to find out, while Irene replaces her on the mission. Meanwhile, Pacino notes Alonso is behaving unlike himself: he is unwillingly feeding information to Bosco about their mission.

Back in 1976, the same scene as earlier plays out, but the staff member that warned Salvador enters with a warning about a bomb threat, urging the men to leave. While the council is out, Alonso, Irene and Pacino sneak in, with Pacino faking several of the votes so no one will be the wiser and history is restored back to normality.

In the present, Lola and Marta are working, looking for information on their respective tasks, when Marta finds something and rushes to find Ernesto, just as Angustias comes in. Angustias and Lola talk, and it seems that this Lola's efforts are finally melting the wall between them, because Angustias gives her some advice on what to do, and offers her help if she needs it.

In 1976, Irene calls to the present to report their success in their initial mission, but Salvador knows the Ángel Exterminador won't be helping any time soon and tells them they must remain in the past until Adolfo Suárez is proclaimed Prime Minister. The trio stays in the same house the Patrol used during their mission to save the Guernica painting, and Alonso reminisces about Julián before retiring to his room, which prompts Irene and Pacino to worry.

In the present, Angustias shows the information she has found on Bosco: he is a 19th-century man who is using the identity of one of his deceased great-grandchildren to fake his origins. Having discovered the time doors, he used them to go to the late 18th century-early 19th century to create the Ángel Exterminador. The three of them do, however, worry about Marta, whose findings turn out to be unsuccessful in bringing information.

In 1976, Alonso walks with Bosco in a golf field, and the latter tells the former what he is to do: Suárez will be there later that day to play, and Alonso must murder him, lest he become one of the rallying points around which the Spanish democracy will be built.

In the present, Lola meets with Ernesto and tells him that all the information and documentation Lucía gave her to find her father is false: she has nothing. However, there is an option: if she meets with her older self, the one that had yet to betray the Ministry, perhaps she will get the information. Ernesto is initially reluctant, but smiles as he says that not only will he help her, but he will give her a letter so his old self knows to help Lola. Lola goes to July 11th 2010, the day of the 2010 FIFA World Cup final. Meeting with 2010!Ernesto, she gives him the letter, which immediately convinces him that she is there on a mission.

In 1976, Alonso returns to the safe house just as they have to return to ensure Suárez is in the final list of candidates, and Pacino feels suspicion about him.

In 2010, Old!Lola is astonished to see Young!Lola is the person who wants to meet with her, and thinks it is a trap set by Salvador, but Young!Lola reveals she only wants to learn the truth about Lucía's father. Old!Lola realizes the reason Young!Lola is asking her is because her 2017 self is dead, and tells Young!Lola to leave. Young!Lola tells her how to speak with her if she changes her opinion.

In the present, Salvador meets with Marta, and gently tells her that she needs to take a break before she breaks down, but during the meeting Angustias comes and pulls him out of his office.

In 1976, Suárez is (unsuccessfully) playing golf, when Alonso appears in the field and points his handgun at Suárez. Suddenly, Pacino appears and points his gun at Alonso, while Irene and several 1976 Ministry agents appear to protect Suárez. Alonso makes to shoot, but Pacino is faster and shoots twice, killing Alonso instantly. Irene takes Suárez away to safety, while Pacino swears to kill all of the Ángel Exterminador's agents. Just then, Bosco is listening in on the action, and is furious because his last chance to get rid of Suárez has failed, as the Ministry has taken the man to safety.

In the present, while Lola tells Lucía that she was unable to find the truth about her father, Salvador shows Suárez around the Ministry (the same thing Suárez will do in 1978 to a young Salvador) and also gives him a few tips for the future.

Lola and Marta continue to work on their tasks, and Marta is starting to feel down because, no matter what she looks for, she cannot find something that will pinpoint to a future meeting of the Sons of Padilla (who use newspapers announcements to hide place and time of the meeting). Lola suggests something: why doesn't she put in the announcements? After all, they are in the Ministry, and they could easily go to any time to publish a call. The two meet with Salvador and Ernesto in the cafeteria, and Salvador not only agrees, but decides that they might as well kill two birds with one stone.

Lola then receives a call from her old self: she wants to speak in person. The two meet in a park in 2010, the same where Lola met with Lucía in 2017, and Old!Lola reveals the truth: in 1951, years before she was recruited, she worked for a family whose parents had denounced a man that had been imprisoned in a concentration camp. Upon escaping, the man went to the family and killed the parents, leaving a young baby orphan - Lucía, whom Lola would adopt but then give to two good friends of hers after she joined the Ministry. Young!Lola is relieved, in some way, to learn that Lucía is not actually her daughter.

In the present, Salvador and Ernesto speak about the appearance of several announcements in different newspapers, where the Sons of Padilla are called to free Pere Folch (who is dead, but they don't know it). In a fit of Bad "Bad Acting", they mention that it'll be a mess, given that Suárez is still in the 2017 Ministry. Bosco, listening on them, decides to take advantage of this so he can finally take over the Ministry, and calls for all of his men to come at the same time the Sons of Padilla do.

Inviting Bosco to join them in Salvador's office, Salvador, Ernesto and Irene watch as the Sons of Padilla use multiple time doors to infiltrate the Ministry, obviously intent in freeing Pere Folch, but then the Ángel Exterminador minions come in as well. Bosco tells Ernesto, Irene and Salvador that he knows they know he is part of the Ángel Exterminador, and that they won't be able to leave, since his bodyguards have orders to kill anyone that tries to leave the office. The two groups meet in the middle of the Ministry's corridors, and soon a brutal fight starts between the two groups.

Suddenly, though, Salvador gives an order, and Ernesto makes a call: the gate that leads to the time doors' well shuts down, isolating all of the Ángel Exterminador and the Sons of Padilla from the time doors. Under Bosco's astonished gaze, another order leads to sleeping gas being thrown on the fighters, making them all fall asleep and finally putting an end to the threat both groups represent. Bosco attempts to call for help, but Pacino has already knocked out Bosco's bodyguards, and when Salvador wonders what to do with Bosco, someone else requests the honor: Alonso. Bosco tries to blow Elena up, but Salvador has already placed a signal inhibitor to stop the signal from being sent, and Pacino takes the detonator before Alonso furiously grabs Bosco.

Back in 1976, after Alonso returned from his meeting with Bosco, he told Irene and Pacino about Bosco blackmailing him, the threat on Suárez and Bosco's bugging of Salvador's office and the phones, so they decided to lay on a trap on Bosco. The man threatens to use his contacts in the government to destroy them, but Irene produces a recording of Bosco admitting his real identity and intentions for the Ministry. Alonso gleefully takes Bosco away for interrogation, with Salvador only asking him not to hurt the man too much. Soon after, Salvador escorts Suárez back to his time, and Suárez makes sure to remember Salvador's name for the future.

Lola finally manages to tell Lucía the truth about her parents, and Lucía points out that, in the end, it turned out to be as Lola said, but she replies that, if she has a daughter, she will be as great as her. Lola later has a videoconference talk with Old!Lola, in which Old!Lola offers knowledge about the future, but Young!Lola replies she prefers to wait. Before cutting off, Young!Lola decides to give a warning to Old!Lola: never to join a group called Darrow. Old!Lola remembers something: the person who murdered Lucía's parents was actually her, because Lucía's birth parents had been the ones that denounced Lola's father, leading to his death in prison. To atone for that, she decided to take Lucía in and take care of her.

Alonso rescues Elena. Pacino buries the hatchet with Marta - who has decided to return to her time. And Angustias, Ernesto, Irene and Salvador watch Adolfo Suárez's speech about the Political Associations' Law that would begin to open the Spanish democracy.
