Recap / Eight Bit Theater Chapter 1 Light Warriors Unite

Go To

Black Mage: So why is it we're going through the Giant's Forest?
Fighter: Because beyond it is the Cave of No Return.
BM: Riiiiight. And we would ever want to go there because...?
F: Dude. Weren't you paying attention to the old man who tipped us off?
BM: Just indulge me.
F: Within the Cave of No Return lies the Armor of Invincibility. Duh.
BM: Wait. If it's a Cave of No Return, then how does anyone know what's inside of it?
(Black Mage and Fighter stare at each other.)
F: Well where would you suggest they put a suit of mystical Armor of Invincibility?
BM: OK, Chuckles. From now on, I pick the adventures.
F: Phooey.
—The first comic that started it all
The first chapter in 8-bit Theater, where two guys Fighter and Black Mage, returning from a wild goose chase in The Giant's Forest, they decide to apply for a job of being Warriors of Light, where they meet a money-loving, contract binding Thief, a beautiful-yet-violent White Mage, and Red Mage, the pompous munchkin who loves to pad his stats. They are from comics 1 to 47.

The Giant's Forest and Random Encounter

The story starts in the Giant's Forest, with two guys, Fighter and Black Mage, walking lost within it due to Fighter believing from an old man he paid that within said forest lays the "Cave of No Return," where the mystical Armor of Invincibility lays. Black Mage then stats the he'll pick the adventures from then on. Later, while trying to find a way out, they come across a giant, causing BM to flee, leaving the giant to Fighter, only for the former to be assaulted by a robber. Despite being out-powered by the robber, he's rescued by Fighter, while the robber gets stepped on by the pursuing giant. BM then comes up with a plan, reading from "Nintendo Power" booklet, and asks for Fighter to distract the giant while he prepares. Reading the booklet as Fighter is brutally beaten down by the giant, BM laughs at a "four white mages team." saying it'll never work. Prepared, (as Fighter is nearly dead), Black Mage uses "Hadoken" to obliterate the giant, along with the entire forest, (except for the robber), much to Fighter's displeasure. While walking back to town with the robber on their trail, Fighter reveals he gave the old man all their gold in exchange for "information on where to find an adventure," much to BM anger. Just as they reach town, they have a 'Random Encounter,' and despite Fighter's taunts hyping up BM being able to destroy them with Hadoken, its revealed that he can only use that skill once a day, and with no other options left, BM improvises by using "Fighterdoken," flinging Fighter straight into the monsters as he uses "Two-Fisted Monkey Style Attack" to slay the monsters.

Return to Corneria and Gathering of Warriors

Now at the gates, (whose guards won't stop saying "Welcome to Corneria"), and getting sidetracked by Fighter being The Ditz, they come across a sign, asking for 4 warriors, Fighter annoys BM enough that if the former can find two more souls before BM can come back with the money, they'll apply. Just as BM leaves, the robber reveals himself to Fighter, and convinces him to sign both himself and BM into a contract to work for the robber, helping Fighter recuit one more person for the Light Warrior job. As BM meanwhile tries to find the old man who scammed Fighter, he kills a trio of elderly men with Blot-2. He later bumps into another old man in red who was boasting about his money and wears BM's patience thin, causing BM to think that he was the scammer, and kills him and to steal his money. As BM returns to split the money, he instead decides to use the money for himself, only to get turned down by the Black Magic shopkeeper. Walking back, he (literally) bumps into a beautiful lady in white robes. After a horrific first impression; (I AM THE BLACK MAGE! I CASTS THE SPELLS THAT MAKES THE PEOPLES FALL DOWN!), then admitting to murdering the elderly men from the retirement center, as well as serval gross pick-up lines and getting hammer bludgeoned by the lady to near death, the lady reveals herself to be called White Mage, and heals him and is convinced by BM to join him and Fighter on the Light Warrior quest. When he comes back with WM, the robber from before introduces himself as Thief, who reveals the contract he made Fighter sign makes BM, Fighter, and possibly WM, work for him on the Light Warrior gig, and Thief will take most of the wealth and winning, with Fighter writing a clause that allows him to keep any swords that he finds on their travels while giving up the dental plan, much to BM's consternation. After Thief shows off his skills by stealing the clothes off Fighter's back and his proficiency with knives, and WM explains she beat up BM and healed him from near death, they prepare to set off, but are met by a man in red.

Red Mage's Arrival and Survivor 8-bit Style

The man in red calls himself Red Mage, a rather pompous munchkin who wishes to join them as well. However, because the job only asks for four, someone must be voted off. They decide to use BM's hat to cast the votes, and despite BM's insistence of using RM's hat, BM allows them to use his, on the condition that he hides so not show his face to anyone. While by himself, he learns that the rest of the party intends to vote him off, and despite him wanting to kill them all right then and there, he instead decides to cheat, voting Fighter away. His plans are interrupted when a little boy called Onion Kid bumps into him, causing the kid to catch a look on BM's true face. Traumatized, the kid lets out a scream before blacking out, causing the rest of the party to catch BM trying to trash the vote (and kid) in the garbage. Despite WM's healing attempt, she fails to see anything wrong with him, unaware of the fact that Onion Kid has been traumatized by BM's face. After Onion Kid wakes up, BM immediately has him scamper off, whispering of redefining the world as living pain to the child. After destroying the votes with a fire magic spell, BM admits the votes would be pointless and that the only ones that can be voted off are White Mage and Red Mage. In a tie breaker decided by Fighter, Red Mage's affinity for swords winds up being the dealbreaker, voting off White Mage to BM's fury.
