Recap / Dragons The Nine Realms S 1 E 3 A Hole New World

Go To

Jun follows Tom to the cave where he keeps Thunder, resulting in him showing her the Hidden World.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • A Mythology Is True: Jun happily states that dragons being real must mean yetis and chupacabras must be real too. Tom is more skeptical about that.
  • Call-Back: Quite a few to the first movie. Jun following Tom, subsequently meeting Thunder, and her first flight are all much like Astrid's first meeting with Toothless, though with much less hostility on all ends.
  • Foreshadowing: Tom and Jun see a large hole in the cavern that looks like it was freshly drilled. They find it foreboding enough to feel like they might encounter whatever made it.
  • Forgot I Could Fly: While running from the Gembreakers, Tom forgets he can just jump on Thunder and fly away. He rectifies the problem when he remembers.
  • Pinocchio Nose: Tom has an entire list of lie-giveaways, which Jun recites as he follows through with all of them.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: While Thunder and the Terrible Terrors are friendly, not all dragons are going to be. Jun happily approaches some Gembreakers, who respond to an unfamiliar creature invading their personal space like a wild animal would, hostility.
  • Tears of Joy: Jun is awed enough by flying through the fissure on Thunder that she starts crying.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: Jun tries commanding Wu & Wei with the air of a wizard taming a familiar. Wu & Wei just feel disrespected, and make their displeasure known. She then tries using her necklace to hypnotize them, and they respond by eating it. It isn't until she tries a gentler approach that they listen, and regurgitate her necklace.
