Recap / Dragons: Riders of Berk S4 E11 "A Time to Skrill"

Go To

The Skrill has escaped and has a vendetta against Hiccup and Toothless.

Tropes:

  • Call-Back:
    • When the riders arrive at Berk to assist in defending against the Skrill attack, they find the auxiliary unit is already on the job.
    • Judging from what Spitelout was going to do with his 2 axes, he would likely make noises as Gobber mentioned in the first film.
  • Enemy Mine: The Skrill recognizes Dagur as something he hates more, and works with Hiccup in order to defeat him.
  • Heel–Face Turn: The Skrill is no longer antagonistic after Hiccup sets it free at the end of the episode.
  • It Only Works Once: Trying to refreeze the Skrill fails because it recognizes the trap from last time and proceeds to derail the plan by nearly trapping Hiccup and Toothless in the ice.
  • Lesser of Two Evils: Lampshaded in order to be defied. See Take a Third Option below.
  • Lost Voice Plot: After getting a nasty shock from the Skrill, Spitelout spends the rest of the episode making gibberish as he tries to communicate.
  • Never Going Back to Prison: Invoked by the Skrill; it won't fall for Hiccup's ice trap this time, and actually attempts to seal Hiccup and Toothless in the glacier instead.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Lampshaded by Hiccup; he thought that Dagur and the Dragon Hunters would take the Skrill down for him, but instead he simply made things much, much worse by delivering the Skrill directly to Dagur.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: When he and the other riders are about to refreeze the Skrill in the glacier, Hiccup notes that it isn't much different than what the dragon hunters do. They're just using a different cage.
  • Oh, Crap!: Snotlout and the Twins have this reaction when they realize the Skrill is heading to Berk.
  • Revenge:
    • The Skrill's motive throughout the episode. It wants to get back at Hiccup and Toothless for tricking it into being frozen again.
    • Also Spitelout's. He wants to defeat the Skrill because it shocked him when he tried to fight it.
  • Rule of Symbolism: Hiccup needs to replace Toothless' tail fin and chooses a dragon hunter sail, with their logo on proud display. Shortly afterward, he accidentally leads the Skrill right into the hunters' cage and nearly goes along with trapping the Skrill in ice again.
  • Take a Third Option: Faced with allowing the Skrill to be owned by Dagur or trapping it in the glacier again, Hiccup allows it to go free instead. It works, as the Skrill forgives them and leaves without attacking anyone.
  • Taking the Bullet: Hiccup tries to do this for the Skrill when Ryker attempts to shoot it with a Dragonroot arrow. Then, Toothless does this for Hiccup, although he is able to deflect the arrow rather than being hit by it.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Unable to deal with the Skrill, Hiccup tries to trick the dragon hunters to help him but is unable to capture the downed Skrill himself, allowing it to get into the hands of the dragon hunters instead.
