Recap / Diagnosis Murder The House On Sycamore Street

Go To

Mark is approached by a Dr. Zachary Drummond, formerly one of his med students, currently a plastic surgeon working with Dr. Lloyd Stern. Drummond is notably distressed, saying he needs to show Mark something. Unfortunately, Zachary is dead when Mark reaches him the next day, having apparently thrown himself to his death from a rooftop. Mark has his doubts that Zachary took his own life, and with Amanda and Jack at his side, damn well intends to prove it.

Of course, he has to juggle this between getting funding for an ER unit from wealthy banker J.D. Gantry, and as he does so, finds Zachary's death goes deeper than he realizes...

"The House on Sycamore Street" displays symptoms of the following tropes:

  • And Starring: George Hamilton as J.D. Gantry.
  • Arms Dealer: Webber is introduced buying the gun he is to use in Gantry's "assassination" from one of these guys, who he kills soon after.
  • Attack on the Heart: Webber kills the arms dealer this way, and with the gun he sold him to boot.
  • Ballistic Discount: Webber murders the gunrunner who gives him the gun he's meant to kill Lenox with... with the gun he's meant to kill Lennox with.
  • Car Fu: Webber has a thing for running people over, apparently, as he tries to hit Amanda while fleeing Zachary's condo and later tries to run Mark down in the street.
  • Chekhov's Gun: During a lunch with Mark, J.D. cuts his finger. This later proves a part in unraveling his plan.
  • Conspicuously Public Assassination: Gantry arranges for Harry to be shot dead at the dinner for Community General.
  • Disney Villain Death: Webber sends Zachary to the grave by throwing him from a balcony.
  • Faking the Dead: J.D. Gantry set this up in order for him to disappear after stealing his customer's money.
  • He Knows Too Much: Mark figures this is the likely motive for Dr. Stern's murder.
  • Impostor Forgot One Detail: Not that Lennox knew this detail, let alone his murder, but Mark figures out that the Gantry attending the dinner is not the real one, as he doesn't have the bandage on his finger J.D. had from cutting his finger.
  • Only Known by Initials: No-one says what the "J.D." in J.D. Gantry stands for.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: Webber gives off one of these as he gets in the elevator with Zach.
I hate elevator music [pulls a pistol on Zach]... don't you?
  • Shout-Out: Upon seeing Mark in his bandaged getup, Gantry says he resembles The Invisible Man.
  • Stealing from the Till: Justine was stealing from the bank in order to cover Zachary's debts. As it turns out, Gantry has been doing so for a while, hence the need for this plot.
  • Title Drop: Dr. Stern does this by confirming the address of a meeting place when Webber calls him.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Once Lennox has the surgery to look like Gantry, Gantry murders Dr. Stern to keep him from potentially revealing the plot.
