On a dark and stormy night in LA, Jesse is sent home by Mark after being on his feet for days. When he gets to the parking lot, he sees a man collapse from a heart attack, and rushes for help. But when he comes back with help, the man brought into Community General's care is not the man he saw die. No-one will believe him in his sleep deprived state, so Jesse brings it upon himself to prove he saw what he saw. But why are the dead man's companions hiding his death?
Meanwhile, Norman meets with the widow of one of Community General's recently deceased biggest donors. While attempting to keep the grant coming in, Norman finds there is much more to the widow than he thought.
"Misdiagnosis Murder" displays symptoms of the following tropes:
- Absence of Evidence: Mark realizes that Max isn't Gregory because his heartbeat doesn't indicate the scar tissue on the heart that Gregory should have due to his war injury.
- Always Murder: There is in fact not a murder in this episode. Greg dies of natural causes. The mystery centers more around his associates faking him still being alive, and why they are doing this.
- Daddy Had a Good Reason for Abandoning You: The whole point of making it look like Gregory King was still alive was so that he could try to reconcile with his long-abandoned daughter (he wasn't aware her mother was pregnant, as they had broken up over him fighting in the Vietnam War). Unfortunately, Gregory died before his team could get her there, and since putting sunglasses on him and carrying him on people's shoulders wasn't really a good option here, Max Rondell (who was like a brother to Gregory) takes his place and voices what Gregory wanted to say.
- Dead Person Impersonation: Max Rondell pretending to be Gregory King after the latter's death.
- The Exit Is That Way: When Amanda tells him to go home and get some sleep, Jesse angrily says he will and turns and strides dramatically through a door... which turns out to be the broom closet. Then he goes down the hallway out of the pathology lab, and then turns in the other direction.
- In-Universe Nickname: Dale Tanner, the late donor to Community General had the nickname "Billion Dollar Dale".
- It Was Here, I Swear!:Jesse sees a man die of a heart attack in the parking garage. When he returns with aid, the body is gone and another man is faking tachycardia. Jesse spends the rest of the episode trying to persuade people of what he saw.
- Let Off by the Detective: Mark initially wants to report Dr. Quiller for the shenanigans he and the others pulled tonight, but when he sees Ruth relieved to have closure with her father, he decides to keep mum.
- May–December Romance: This is implied to be the case between Page and Dale, as Norman was expecting her to be a blue haired old woman. For sake of reference, Krista Allen was 24 years old when this episode premiered.
- Special Guest: Richard Romanus as Dr. Ed Quiller.
