Recap / Diagnosis Murder S 2 E 7 You Can Call Me Johnson

Go To

Jack comes to Mark with a favor to ask. He wants Mark to perform heart surgery on a "Mr. Johnson". "Johnson" is in actuality Al Bartell, who is not only Jack's godfather, but a godfather in the mob. Mark works his magic, but not long after, Al dies anyway. Facing trouble on all sides, Mark needs to solve the mystery of Al's death before his own comes raring up to him.

"You Can Call Me Johnson" displays symptoms of the following tropes:

  • Absence of Evidence: The big clue is the time gap in the FBI's photographs.
  • Actor Allusion: Vinnie tells Mark a little "story" about Bartell's people killing a horse.note
  • The Alleged Car: Mark's Jaguar once again breaks down on him.
  • Dirty Cop: Agent Wheeler, who sabotages the sutures to cause the death of Al.
  • External Combustion:
    • This appears to be one of Al's specialties, as he murdered witness Sam Krueger and Agent Wheeler's partner with one.
    • Vinnie rigs one up to Mark's rental car in revenge for his father. Thankfully, Mark isn't in it when it blows
  • In Series Nick Name: Al is also known as "Al 'The Bomber' Bartles".
  • Laser-Guided Karma: A car thief has apparently been working the parking lot of Community General lately. When he tries to steal Mark's car, he nearly gets blown up. He presumably starts rethinking his life choices and making some changes after this, likely starting with his pants.
  • Medication Tampering: In a sense. The culprit killed Al by dyeing dissolving surgery sutures to resemble the permanent kind.
  • Special Guest: Abe Vigoda as high ranking mobster Al Bartell.
