Go To

There's a huge buzz in the Quinn household as preparations are made for the annual day trip to Barry's amusement park in Portrush.

Tropes

  • Ambiguous Criminal History: Aideen, a childhood friend of Mary and Sarah's, has just gotten out of prison... for something. The contents of her backpack imply whatever it was isn't over.
  • Answer Cut:
    Mary: Where's Clare?
[Clare emerges from the toilets on the now-deserted station, and screams frustratedly.]
  • Artistic Licence – Geography: Downpatrick station (on the Downpatrick & County Down Heritage Railway) was renamed Derry for scenes when they caught the train to Portrush, even though Derry ('Waterside') station is a terminus.
  • Embarrassing Cover Up: An old acquaintance approaches Mary, Sarah, Gerry, and Joe, but none of them recognize her. Rather than admit they don't know who she is, Joe says he has dementia. Mary excuses herself by saying she has Irritable Bowel Syndrome and desperately needs the toilet, then Sarah claims to be having bowel problems as well.
  • Formerly Fat: Mary and Sarah don't recognize the mystery woman as their childhood friend Aideen because she's slimmed down since they last saw her.
  • Heh Heh, You Said "X": When Gerry and Mary speak of Portrush's various "rides" (as in roller coasters), Michelle sniggers because "rides" is also Irish slang for hot people.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Orla takes half of the money from the stranger's backpack and spends it on chocolate bars, then eats the bars en route to returning them.
  • Satchel Switcheroo: James' backpack gets switched with a scary man's, and it turns out to be full of wads of cash and a gun. They spend the episode trying to reswitch them.
  • Saying Too Much: Just when a comment from the woman makes Mary realize she's Aideen, Sarah babbles that it can't be her because the Aideen they know is fatter and in jail. Aideen is frustrated to learn her old friends couldn't remember her, which is what they've been trying to avoid the whole time.
  • Tattooed Crook: Subverted. The man who seems to own the backpack with a gun, money and snacks is heavily tattooed, but is later revealed to have been safekeeping the bag for Aideen, who recently got out of jail.
